he fought thursday night and was dropped in the 7th(?) but still pulled of the ud.i like hearns but i dont see him being an elite level fighter like his father
apparently he inherited his fathers chin.....and without the amateur background of his father he just doesn't have the same goods, or even close for that matter he's lacking 2 critical things a chin and experience.. so unless he's moved carefully for oh say, the next 4-5 years b4 fighting an actual elite he'll just be a guy getting buy off some decent skills/potential and his fathers name btw i really like him since Tommy's my all time favorite so i hope he lives up to his name
You wrote and excellent post. I do not think Tommy had a bad chin, I just think it was undependable because he was lanky and lanky fighters do not absorb big shots as well as guys shorter and stockier. Most guys cannot take clean Leonard and Hagler and Duran punches, and Hearns did. Hearns did take a nice Duran right hand and he did take clean Hagler punches in round one, and many Leonard punches. I think his chin was decent for a tall lanky fighter, and he came to fight which always left him open, but Tommy was so experienced that he could get in wars and not be hit clean. Ronald? I am not sure. If he did go down it is not good obviously . but maybe it was not a clean knockdown. I have not seen the fight, so I do not know . Tommy had so much more experience than Ronald and was more trained in boxing and was born to be a great boxer. Ronald is Tommy's son and he is good, but he will have to fight a lot just to get some good experience. I do hope Ronald does well, because like you Tommy is one of my favorite fighters and it would be nice to see him win a title. Being close to what Tommy was is out of the question, but winning a title I am not sure.
According to one of Thompson's cornermen, it was a dodgy decision. He also says Hearns was nearly stopped and wanted to quit. This is what he posted on another forum...
That post and story Thompson's cornerman said was very discouraging. Hopefully he was just saying things to favor the corner he was working. I remember when Luigi Minchillo actually thought Thomas Hearns quit in the late rounds of his fight with him. Hearns thought he heard the bell and walked back to his corner, and Minchillo thought he won and Hearns had quit. Fact is you could hear what Hearns thought was the bell ringing, so Minchillo was wrong-Hearns actually did hear a bell. But to this day Minchillo thinks Hearns quit, which is ridiculous.
