Stupid comment.......have you ever heard of Strom Thurmond?.....Robert Byrd?.....George Wallace? They were all Democrats at the time and they were segregationists and even Byrd had been a member of the KKK.

I don't know Jack, I don't know about Holmes ever lying, I think he's right.

Holmes might just have been mistaken without intending to lie, as many are when they hear secondhand accounts. Or maybe he's right. I'd be curious to see what Cooney or his management say.

All i know for sure is that I googled it when the thread came up. All i kept getting was phrases such as "rumoured" and "reported" that Reagan was to call Cooney. There were no direct quotes from anyone. Certainly none from Reagan or Cooney that I could find. These "reports" have a way of becoming fact over the years.

Yeah, if it is indeed true. It was certainly an "Irish" thing. Which is not the same as a "Race" thing at all.

Conn must not be from the States or doesn't get out much....

Members of the cooney camp even said it was true as well as a few boxing historians. This is reagan were talking about so it should not be shocking.

I've heard this story too. Irish seem to have this clanish thing going all the time, so excited because someone else is irish leanage. I'm part Irish but I don't feel any connection to the "mother land". To me an irish guy is just a white guy with a funny accent.
