A world class prime boxer with excellent footwork needs only to learn (not even perfect) a basic sprawl and some rudimentary kicks and they can neutralize any hybrid MMA fighter's entire game and own them in the cage. :good

She tried, she just didn't realize( nor did the people underestimating her) how good she really was as a Mixed Martial Artist. Look at Royce Gracie, When he couldnt do what he wanted, he got beat!:deal

Nah, Holly Holm had far better conditioning. Just because Ronda's face looks like that of a neanderthal, doesn't mean she has unwordly amounts of muscle mass.

Holm didn't have an ounce of visible bodyfat and made Rousey look flabby in comparison.

No. MMA by definition covers a much wider range of tools than boxing, boxing is a subset of that. This comment giving boxing alone too much credit and giving Holm much too little credit for how she managed to deal with Rousey. By definition being a boxer who adds a few other tools to their skillset is now a hybrid MMA fighter, regardless of where the strengths are and how they are used.

In this particular fight, Holm was the better fighter with the better game plan and boxing was one of the tools that she used - funnily enough boxing was nothing to do with how she escaped Rousey's finisher, nor was it how she ended the fight.

Boxing isn't a subset of MMA.

Holm did a little of everything I give you that. The punches that busted her up were from a boxing stance. She used her MMA skills to get out of the armbar. Boxing wise she used a big straight left that landed all during round 1. And at the end of the fight, a big left hand hurt her and the kick ended the fight. So you are right, it was both.

This thread should be stickied. The debate is over. A Boxer won a major MMA title before a MMAist won a major boxing title.

    Boxing won

Boxing skills ARE one of the tools she used, it wasn't "MMA and boxing". MMA is "mixed martial arts" and boxing is one of a few martial arts she drew from her experience of to win.

She used kick-boxing skills to do the KO, boxing to control the distance and wear Rousey down, she used ground fighting skills to get out of the arm-bar and actually got Ronda to the ground another point in the fight to control the pace/get her range. If she entered the fight with 95% boxing skills and some very basic kickboxing or ground fighting training she would have been done when they ended up on the ground. Her kickboxing/ground fighting efforts were NOT rookie level.

MMA is generalist whereas boxing is specialist.
