A great MMA fighter specialized at the ground game would beat a great boxer in an octagon, like Couture beat Toney. All the MMA fighter would have to do is come in low and tackle the boxers legs to put him on the ground and the fight would be pretty much over.

Lets call it like it is. Ronda Rousy didn't just get beat by Holly Holm the boxer. Rousy got dominated by Holly Holm the "all around fighter." Holm is a fighter.

Holm is versed in many techniques that include boxing, kickboxing, and ground game techniques.

The reason why Holm was able to implement her great boxing and kickboxing skills was because she's worked hard on takedown and ground defense.
Holm it appeared is also physically stronger. Rousy wasn't able to quite move Holm physically as she did so many other opponents when trying to take her to the ground and that played bigtime in Holm's favor.

I'm no MMA expert, but it looks like to me that Rousy got beat by a great "all around fighter" in Holm who is more adaptable to different fighting situations than Rousy is.

Boxing didn't beat Rousy, an all-around fighter on both the offensive and defense did.

If that great ground fighter can't take the boxer down then they will get beaten to a pulp. There is no guarantee that the ground fighter has good take down skills ala EHONDA.

Many boxers practice wrestling with their clinching game and have decent skills that could easily adapt. EX Rugby and League players like Anthony Mundine (who was brought up in a boxing gym), would not be taken down easily.

Joseph Parker would be better than Mark Hunt the day he stepped in to an Octagon.

If you don't know how to defend takedown techniques, a boxer will more than likely find himself on the ground where he would be toast.

Take down defence is not hard to learn, and if you are taken down pulling guard is not hard to learn either. Boxer Holm easily beat their show pony.

Elite boxers have amazing footwork and balance, give an elite boxer a 3 month training camp and they would be top 5 in the UFC no problem at all.

Takedown's are not actually that easy to execute, especially when you're competing with someone that has superior footwork, balance and cardio which boxers have an advantage in.

Everything in combat sports needs to be practiced, Holm had at least 2 to 3 years practicing and competing against MMA fighters, I doubt very seriously that you could give Floyd Mayweather with no MMA experience at all and have him do a 3 month training camp to step into an octagon against an MMA champion and expect him to come out on top.
At with any sport or profession, skills are developed and honed over time.

MMA apologists claim that Ronda EHONDA could beat Floyd, and no way am I saying Floyd could do that (beat a champ in 3 months).

MMA has really good top tier talent but tbf its a really shallow pool, there is quite a big gap in most cases from no1 to no5.

Floyd could hang with ranked 5-10 talent (if he was given a good stylistic match up) in 3 months. It might have taken him a couple years to get to the top though.

    Agreed!

......and I do think Mayweather with just a couple of months of an MMA takedown specialist to work with him, would knockout Ronda Rousy with the first punch he landed.
There's to big a gap between the functional strenghth of a man and woman who weigh the same.

Mayweather KO Rousy inside 30 seconds!

Yay, someone else gets it! :D I've said basically the same thing but somehow apparently boxing is it's own magical thing... except it isn't.

Even standing up - boxing is not design to deal with the kind of challenges Muay Thai would throw at them, the typical guards etc are doing to do SFA against a lot of the kicks which can be thrown. In boxing you have body shots, but you don't get your thighs kicked to hell and a well executed powerful Muay Thai kick blocked by a typical boxing guard will (probably) save you from being KO'd but takes a serious toll.

MOST people competing in MMA have a preferred style or styles, by definition it's just a mix of backgrounds. People with JUST boxing are more than welcome to go and box their opponents, maybe it has happened - but there is a clear reason it's not dominated by people who using boxing as 95% of their skill... because they'd never get far enough that you'd know it happened. They'd reach their potential WELL before you got to PPV type events.

The next inevitable step would be to learn other martial arts, and boom. They are mixed martial artists - not boxers.

Agreed with everything you said. Ronda Rousy not only had to guard and worry about Holm's fists, she had to contend with her kicks as well, which takes us back to Holm just being a well rounded fighter. She can box, kick, and defend against takedowns.
Does anyone know if Holm is adequate at wrestling?
It would take a wrestler who is much stronger than Holm physically to beat her as in the UFC, I've never seen anyone (man or woman) throw punches with as good a technique
    as Holly Holm does.

Btw, talk about leg kicks, did anyone see Rid**** Bowes fight in MMA not that long ago? His opponent beat the **** out of Bowe with purely kicking at Rid**** Bowes legs until he quit.
No punches thrown, just pure leg kicks.

Disagree. If you watched the fight she used very little kickboxing. And the KO at the end ronda was fking done before that kick even landed. Holm could have come with a barrage of punches and rr would likely have turtled as she had absolutely nothing left. Take kickboxing out and Holm would still have won the fight.

    :huh

My point is boxing isn't a subpar skill in MMA. They attempt to box but they can't box.

Boxing is it's own entity. You tell an MMA guy that he can only box against a top boxer and he gets ktfo every time. The MMA guy can only get lucky. And vice versa.

Couture was alot like Hopkins, into his late 40's, actually older than Toney, but he was still obviously competing at a higher level than Toney was and wasn't as faded as Toney. Many mma fans forget about Mercer-Sylvia too. Holms clearly beat Rousey with her superior boxing ability and would of ko'd Rousey sooner or later with or without the kick. Broke down Rousey and looked like she broke her jaw in the first round. If anyone was supposed to take down Holm it was Rousey, but she couldn't deal with Holm's boxing.

Sylvia tried to box Mercer which was idiotic. He should have gone straight for the TD

Yep, he stood right in front of Mercer and waited for Mercer to engage him. Mercer shot a right hand out like a lightning bolt.
Sylvia had no idea how quick a pro boxer could strike in comparison to MMA fighters that don't have good technique.
