Ronnie Shields was one of the worst cornermen I've ever seen

Just finished Paulie-Diaz 2. Two things stuck out to me:

1)Diaz easily lost 5 of the first 6. So what does Shields tell his fighter? "Take a round off". What??

2)Paulie did one thing the entire fight. He kept his right hand TIGHT against his face to block the left. It never left his face. But, from round 3 on I noticed almost every time Diaz threw a right it landed square on Paulie's face. So what did Diaz do? Throw the left allllll night and never throw the right. Good job Ronnie

Mother****er made Buddy McGirt look like Eddie Futch

He told him that to calm him down he just got rocked. Diaz career will be over soon getting rocked by Paulie is a very bad sighn for your fighter, I would like to see Diaz Leave the sport in 2 years, I dont like the way he gets beat up.
    and for the Record
I really dont care for shields

As far as this business about him telling Diaz to take the round off... Shields knows his fighter better than the rest of us. Obviously. Clearly. Diaz was hurt in the preceding round. Perhaps Shields was concerned Diaz hadn't fully recovered? Just maybe??

yeah, i mean i understand the logic behind taking a round off but he had almost no way of winning at that point with a round off. and as stated previously, getting rocked by paulie is a real bad sign. if you need an entire ROUND to recover from him that's pretty sad. but you're right: he knows diaz better than the rest of us. I just think that was **** or get off the pot time. if you can't give it your all now, then you've already lost

That I agree with. This is boxing. There are no foxholes to hide in. Just my own view, regardless of circumstances.

  6. Shields and Buddy Mcgirt, are 2 of the same, they are both horribly bad:-(, a guy would be better of with nobody in his corner,, than those idiots...

"Buddy, I just lost the first 11 rounds. My eyes are both cut. And I have a broken rib..."
    "Have some water baby!"
"Buddy...are you listening...I'm getting ****ed up out there"
"And I said HAVE SOME WATER BABY!!"

Shields is terrible! He trained my favorite fighter at one time, who I won't mention because I don't want him linked to Shields, my fighter was unfocused, poorly trained, and Shields only advice for the 7 rounds he was able to advise was "Let your hands go!", but even that pathetic excuse of strategy was'nt heard because there were 3 people talking at the same time. Shields couldnt control his corner even when he tried, his employees didnt respect him and neither did his fighter.

It was neither good nor bad advice on the face of it. On one hand, Diaz needed to start winning rounds or he was going to lose the fight. On the other hand, he had just been hurt and was losing and Shields wanted Diaz to take a second to gather his thoughts so that they would have a chance going into the late rounds.

i don't know, it beefs me a bit the whole throw away a round thing. boxing is a hard sport and you need to fight your heart out every round to win. gather your thoughts after 12 rounds...you got 60 seconds to rest

They had the wrong gameplan for this fight.
They kept trying to go for the body when Pauli wasnt letting Diaz near it. If Baby Bull did the same gameplan in the first fight continously throwing left hooks to the head the fight would of been more competitive, he caught onto it in the championship rounds but it was too little too late.

see from what i saw, paulie had those left hooks down cold. those weren't getting in the rights were. if he threw the consistent lefts and followed them with the rights he would have got some work done. worked him down, got him to the ropes, pounded the body and by round 6 paulie is slowing down and diaz could get some work done

If you watch this fight you will see that Diaz seems to just sit out at arms reach. he had a million opportunities to walk Paulie down, get inside, and go to work. Instead, he just looked at Paulie and Paulie was able to pepper him all night with jabs. For godness sake, Paulie has 5 (count em) 5 knockouts! Why the hell didn't diaz take more chances? Diaz really did not look like he was into the fight.

I did'nt have a problem with Shields instructing Diaz to to take a round off........Diaz had been buzzed pretty good in the round prior, and he may not have been in condition to take the fight to Malignaggi.

What I did have a problem with Shields, is him repeatedly instructing round after round for Diaz to throw the jab.

"You got to throw the jab, you got to throw the jab."
Shields was on Diaz about that, even though Diaz through the whole damn fight had made a concerted effort to throw the jab.
Diaz was throwing the jab, but Malignaggi had a beat on it, and was defending it well, and countering it.

The jab was'nt working for Diaz, so it should have been thrown out the window with the emphasis on instructing Diaz to bob and weave to the inside and unleach hooks and rights to Malignaggi's body and head.

When the hell did Joe Frazier ever try to outjab Ali?????

The matchup similarities in styles were similar in style to that of Frazier and Ali..........
When the hell did Eddie Futch ever instruct Frazier to go out there and outjab Ali????
    Exactly, never!

What Shields should have done in Diaz' preparation for Malignaggi is show him a copy of the first Ali-Frazier fight and told him, this is how you're going to attack Malignaggi.
