I have his fights against : Spider Webb Florentino Fernandez Ralph Tiger Jones Jackie LaBua He was a "walk 'em down" fighter with good stamina and an explosive right hand which he would try to land whenever he could. Had trouble with good boxers who could stick & move. His fights aginst Jones & Fernandez are great action bouts.
The below cut and past is correspondence with a pal o mine as far as I know, the boxrec info on calhoun is correct.he appeared to be ,if not a coming champion,at least a perrenial contender. he stopped rugged middeweights, such as charlie salas and johnny sullivan.his first two losses to spider webb and giardello could have gone either way.when unbeaten,he was matched with g. fullmer.the NY commission didn't let the bout come off thinking calhoun was too inexperienced for fullmer.at that time I thought RC could beat him.in his 2nd fight with webb,he had spider in trouble and got nailed when he seemed on his way to victory.giardello beat him decisively in their second bout.webb was lucky to get the verdict int heir third match.after his second fights with webb and giardello ,he was inconsistant.he usually lost to the good punchers like f. fernandez. early in his career he took a very good punch. one story is that charlie goldman, his trainer, tried to pattern him too much like marciano. calhoun was highly intelligent.wrote scripts for movies, but I don't believe he got anyone to put on screen what he wrote. a friend in germany told me that a pal of his wrote to calhoun, for a signed photo of the boxer.his request was sent care of madison square garden.some months later, the fan received a signed picture of the white film actor.the fellow who got the photo did not know who the caucasian was.
thanks for that info. I can see how he may have been fashioned on Marciano. Spider Webb stayed on the outside and out-boxed Calhoun easily in their 1st fight in my opinion - haven't seen their other 2. the Fernandez fight has them both trading bombs and a case more of who was the better catcher not pitcher. Surprisingly it was Florentino on that night.
Yes he was. I know the guy. There is a white Rory Calhoun that was also an actor. But Calhoun the fighter did work in some films.... This content is protected Tony Valle, Rory Calhoun and Tony Baltazar...Circa 1970
You're right that one was black and one white, but both were actor. I was on the set of one long forgotten film that Rory the boxer was working on. White Rory was a "B" actor whereas Black Rory was a "C" actor.
Screw it... Two different folks or not, there was an actor named Rory Calhoun who played the terrorizing farmer Vincent in the '80 horror cult classic "Motel Hell." His career as an actor took a **** in the 1950s cuz he was supposedly linked to Communism, but it was never proven.... Still, all that bullcrap aside, he was blacklisted by most major studios and worked as an independent actor in low-budget features for chump money... "It takes all kinds of critters to make farmer Vincent's fritters." MR.BILL
