Hello all, lately I've been getting interested in the Holy Trinity of Ross, Canzoneri, and McLarnin and I'm wonderin if any one can school me on these guys a little further. I know they're all outstanding but that's really the breadth of my knowledge. Any additional info or directions to any literature would be much appreciated Thanks!
There are quite a few fights of them on youtube. Here are a few Canzoneri fights, my fav fighter of those three. You need to watch the Canzoneri-Chocolate fight in full, IMO, the best fight of all time. Ross is my favorite of the 3. Such a colorful guy with just an extraordinary life. To anyone who hasn't read it, I highly recommend the Book "Barney Ross" by Douglas Century. Its easily my favorite boxing biography thusfar. As far as Canzoneri goes..The guy was a marvel and has one of the deepest resumes at 135. I have nothing against Whitaker, but its a shame his name comes up more than Canzoneri's when discussing the top 4 or 5 lightweights in history.
Oh, yeah, Ross was the man, in boxing and life. :thumbsup I love all three but boxing-wise Tony just does it for me.
Whats your feelings on the lack of love Canzoneri seems to get when the ATG lightweights are discussed? Where do you rank his resume amongst lightweights? The only one I think is better is Benny Leonards. They say Gans resume at that weight is unreal, but I just don't have a firm enough grasp of most of his opponents yet to form an educated opinion.
He get´s often overlooked there. I guess it has to do because most people see him more as a weight-jumper than a lightweight. In p4p lists he often gets his due and is ranked Top15/20 - or that´s the feeling I have - which is about right I think. But yeah, he should be ranked at lightweight. I´m not an expert on Gans and his era but apparently it can be argued that it was the best ever and he dominated it. IMO Canzoneri is a lock for the Top10, and can be ranked in the Top5. But I have Gans, Leonard, Williams and Duran above him for sure. Whitaker could be argued too. Must say Canzoneri, Duran and Whitaker are amongst my fav fighters ever.
