Guys who would punch their way out of every clinch. Elbows, shots to the hips, wrestling. Basically, brawlers. Good ones anyway. Who are they? Limon and Hamsho both spring to mind for me, and both were very good at manhandling their opponents.
Carmen Basilio seemed to be throwing at all times when in close, and he didn't seem to care where he hit you.
..jake lamotta...rex layne...llight-light puncher..but ruff and tumble paddy demarco....tony galento....
Look who decided to show up...my old pal Jaclem. Full of wisdom. btw, was there a reason why clarence henry never got a title shot against ezzard between 1950 and 1951?
Puerto Rican super bantam Victor Callejas was an absolute shocker! Elbows, head-butts, eye thumbing, he had the full repertoire! His match against Australian Jeff Fenech in the late 80's, in particular, was a no holds barred war. The only thing he didn't do was kick, and who knows, if it had gone another round or two? Mind you Fenech followed Callejas' lead well himself. But how could you blame the opponent when the ref didn't seem to care what Callejas was getting up that night?
hey suzie...how ya doin'...i don't come over here as oftren as i should..press of time...but re: charles and clarence henry. after ezzard kayoed pat velentino and he was back in training it was discovered he had an injured heart muscle, or more likely a muscle injury around the heart. the valentino fight was on oct 14 1949. because of the injury charles didn't fight again until august 15, 1950. this was big layoff for him...he usually fought much more often. the joe louis fight was in the offing- and rather than go in against anyone as formidable as henry could be, he was matched with freddie beshore as a warmup and test case of his apparently healed condition. after he beat louis for universal recognition on september 27, he was back in again on december 6, same year. this is a match that many thought should have been against clarence henry instead. henry fought 12 times in 1950..dropping only one decision. (next to ezz, he was my favorite heavyweight of the time.) had it not been for the injury to charles he might well have gotten a shot at him in that stretch between valentino and beshore. the matchmaking after the elkus family lost control over charles' contract got somewhat bizarre, which is another story..and one about which i have some input...but that's a whole different topic.
