Post Roadwarrior there was no need for RJJ to fight on. He doesn't even need to keep feeding on b-/c level fighters. Just hang em up Roy.
Pretty much what I expected to happen, sadly. Is it over yet? I only managed to catch rounds 6, 7 and 9.
It's hard for me to read too much into that because Joe always takes big shots early in fights before he adjusts to it. It happened against Mitchell, Lacy, Hopkins, Roy, Salem, etc...most of the damage he takes is in the first 3rd of a fight. Because of that, combined with his chin and recuperative abilities, I doubt either knocks him out at any point of their careers.
You cannot be serious. As James Toney and Bernard Hopkins and countless others tried to do, you mean? Jones in his prime did not shell up the way he did now. Jones in his prime is faster than he is now, and as it stood, there were numerous times even tonight where he was beating Joe to the punch. Jones in his prime was adept at keeping the fight in the middle of the ring. He'd get your respect early, and have you playing his game all night with his shoulder and hand feints. He was also a much better offensive fighter and wasn't so shy about going on the attack. Joe is not and has never been a better boxer than Roy Jones Jr. Joe is an awkward, swarming, volume punching pressure fighter. His timing is hard to get down, he gives strange angles and he lets his hands go. But he is not a better boxer than Roy Jones. Roy in his day had excellent skills. His counter punching abilities were unparalleled. His body punching was devastating, and was constantly looked at as one of, if not the best of his era in that category. And, if push came to shove and Roy was forced on the ropes, a few years ago there would have been no shelling up. There would have been a primed and dangerous Roy Jones Jr. looking for countering opportunities, seeing them, and taking them. He's become gun shy in his twilight, of course, but put Joe in there with Roy of the Ruiz fight or prior, and it's not pretty for Calzaghe.
hmmmm i thought jones would have done better... props to calzaghe for the win. but jones' performance was not what i thought it would be.
Fair enough, I will say this much, Calzaghe always finds a way to get the job done in the end. I think it's a combination of his ugly punching style and lack of tough oppenents in the prime of his career, that make fans think twice about either ranking him highly P4P or give him the credit he deserves. I hate to say it, but Calzaghe is probably the best fighter out there from 168-179, Dawson is only man standing in his way of complete dominance now.
