    I like MAJR, he's a great poster.

He's 100% straight down the middle.

I think he's one of only a select few posters that are fair and objective.

In an interview with Boxing Monthly Collins said he relinquished his belt because he couldn't get up for Calzaghe, that he didn't know who he was at the time and he'd never seen him fight before, the only problem with that is he clearly did know who he was because Calzaghe beat one of his main sparring partners (Mark Delaney). Delaney was an Irish national champion at LH as an amateur and he had a reputation as a banger and a hard man. He'd never been off his feet in his life and he used to give Collins good work in the gym.

Both Delaney and obviously Calzaghe were undefeated at the time and Calzaghe's then promoter Mickey Duff had lost the purse bid, which meant Joe had to travel down to Es*** to defend his British SM title on Delaney's 'manor'. Calzaghe beat the living **** out of him in front of a very partisan and hostile 2000 strong pro Delaney crowd, dropping him on his ass twice and shattering his nose into pieces seconds into the first round.

The only reason the fight lasted as long as it did (rsf 5) was because Calzaghe went a bit mental after that instead of settling down and picking his shots, and because Delaney was extremely tough and very brave. Delaney's face was grotesque by the end, it looked like it had been stamped and shat on by an angry moose. Collins, who later claimed he had no idea who Calzaghe was and had never seen him fight, came up to Joe at the post-fight party and told him: ''You're doing good. You were excellent tonight. I know Mark well because I've sparred with him and you've just beaten a good fighter''

Collins would've most likely heard of Calzaghe before he even turned pro. Calzaghe won three consecutive ABA titles at different weights in the amateurs (a feat that had only been achieved once before - 72 years ago at the time) and he stopped all but one of his opponents on route to winning his second and third titles up at LM and MW respectively.

It wasn't just the achievement of winning those three consecutive titles at different weights that made it notable, it was the manner in which he did so. He'd stopped three of his four opponents during the later in the first round, and the only fighter to take him into the third round during the former down at LM was future WBC SM champion Glen Catley, who Joe beat twice in the amateurs. Catley like Delaney, was also one of Collins regular sparring partners (one of his main ones for the Benn and Eubank fights). Some of Joe's stoppage victims in those championships were highly thought of prospects at the time, a former ABA champion, and future British, Commonwealth, European, and world champions in the pros. Joe beat them all with ease. I very much doubt Collins wouldn't have known who he when he turned pro.

All of Joe's pro fights had been televised on various different channels at the time too, although a couple of which only brief highlights of.

Calzaghe was 22-0 (21) when Collins was scheduled to defend his title against him and contrary to what a lot of you bigots and imbeciles think or desperately want others to believe, before his metacarpals turned into dried out twigs he had a reputation as a big puncher, a reputation he'd had since his amateur days. Remember that just three months earlier, in what would turn out to be his last fight, Collins had been dropped on his ass by the lowly Craig Cummings too.

you imply it in your cut n pastes for years. I cannot tell YOU why YOU do it. ....kind of an odd request......

again, you've deliberately misread whats in front of you - my post is telling you that you no longer mention it on ESB, including the Cleverly threads. quote yourself if you think that's untrue. Not on this thread, ANY thread. no more bailey 'clev is great' posts.

np if you need it pointing it out, its you.

Are you shot away Herol :huh
I will show you the post again as it may help you along. Read it again, several times if needed and then get into your head what I have written... Take your time

Where have I wrote Collins ducked Calzaghe?
Why would I mention Cleverly on a debate involving Jones, Eubank, Woodhall, Collins and Calzaghe? You seem to be losing it more than I first thought Herol. Still it made HoldMyBeer laugh, but I doubt he knows what he is laughing at

Below is what I was asked and my reply below that

naaaa, you WONT show me the same cut and paste post you've been making for years implying that Steve was set to fight Joe but then decided not to, implying Steve ran from Joe. You will pretend it was THIS post in this thread instead.

But since you aren't currently implying Steve ran from Joe, I am happy you've come round - that Steve did NOT run from Joe.

I think it is pretty safe to say Collins ducked Calzaghe. He sure wanted Roy though.

Were Calzaghe and Collins going to face off and the winner potentially getting a shot at Roy when Collins collapsed in training?

Collins was due to defend against Calzaghe but decided to retire. Collins was due to make a comeback, have a warm up and challenge Calzaghe, so they were due to appear on the same bill against fighters to showcase themselves against. Calzaghe defended against R Thornberry as his showcase fight and Collins was due on that bill, but Collins decided not to comeback after he was unwell in training.
I was not aware that the winner would get to fight Jones, I remember Calzaghe saying something like everyone knows why you retired etc about Collins, on a boxing programme, then there was later talk of the Collins comeback that didnt happen.

That was Lou DiBella's thinking at the time, in March 1999. Collins was desperate to fight Roy, as we saw when he got into the ring after Roy had beaten Ricky Frazier. General Zod provided some great links last year regarding this.

Roy initially agreed to fight Collins, but after talking with Murad Muhammad, he decided against it. So Collins was left in limbo. But HBO preferred a Reggie Johnson fight for Roy, to unify the titles at 175, in a bigger fight. Collins had been retired for 18 months at that point. Lou DiBella said that he'd like to see Collins fight Joe, with the winner potentially fighting Roy.

But Collins then collapsed in training and was advised to retire, while Joe stated that he wasn't chasing after Roy. Lou De Bella then tried to find Joe at spot on the De La Hoya Vs Trinidad undercard in Sept 1999, but Joe was injured and he didn't fight again until Jan 2000, against David Starie.
