I'm a huge RJJ fan but even i think he has tarnished his career greatly by fighting on too long. I mean getting KOed by Danny Green This content is protected , Danny Green ! I'm an Aussie and even i think this is ridiculous Always hard to see the future, but imagine if Roy had retired after the Ruiz win. He really would have gone down as legend if he had. I do think bulking up to heavy started Roy's body's degredation of his relexes and speed. Add in father time and that was the beginning of the end.
It's a damn shame that he fought on long enough to be knocked out by fighters he'd have handled relatively easy at his peak, but it doesn't tarnish his career. Close thread.
If Roy did tarnish it, it's only slightly. Most great fighters fight on too long, until they're shells of their former selves. Roy is no different.
i just wrote my first top 10 atg list on the classic and got butchered (rightfully so) for putting roy on it. either way, i will always maintain he's one of the most naturally talented fighters i've ever seen...easily in the top 3. if he had retired after ruiz he'd be on a lot of top 20 lists and nothing he's done after has diminished him to me that much. in fact the tarver win proved he could triumph under adversity when not nearly at his best. his losses hurt him, even in my book but he's still a legend and as TS said, all the greats go too long
It only seems that way now because he is still fighting, being way past his best, the fresher image overpowers the older one at times. In the years to come when he finally retires that will change quite a bit. I would not be surprised to see Jones' name creeping up the ATG list after he has been retired for a while. Instead of what he didn't do, people will take a more of an insightful look on what he did, which is easily overshadowed when you have to watch him embarrass himself every year.
Many people say he should have retired after the Ruiz fight, but I say he should have retired after the first Tarver fight. Although you would have many haters saying he was scared and retired without giving Tarver a re-match. Still, winning a heavyweight belt, and dropping back down to regain the light heavyweight championship in your very next fight is a great feat. That win is underrated because it was the first time Roy looked human in a boxing match, but it is a very great thing to add to an already great legacy, even if Roy did not look his best.
sure george foreman was occasionally prone to silly or emotional statements but he was bang on when he expressed his respect for roy during that fight. he said roy needed to win the last few rounds and all he had to do it with was heart. he did, won clearly and should have rode off into the sunset knowing that he was at the end of a brilliant career, talent finally diminishing but still the best fighter in the world
He should have retired after the first Tarver fight and we'd all be looking at him in a different light. If he'd have chosen this option he could have maintained his god like status.
He's just like 98% of the great fighters of history. Just a relative handful actually had the sense to walk away while at the top. The rest continue to ignore obvious warning signals that they're finished or at least two or three rungs down on the ladder they once stood at the top of. They hang around and get beaten by fighters who more than likely would never have done so while they were in their prime, but their state of denial is too great for them to see this clearly. Jones is typical of the vast majority, and Hopkins may be too.
