I am not as great on my boxing history as many posters here.

But I know it is a great thing to take the LHW championship after dropping from heavyweight.

true but there legacies are built on different premises. jones on supernatural talent, hopkins on workmanlike efficiency

Once a fighter becomes champion they remain champion forever. Jones' achievements couldn't possibly be undone, not by Glen Johnson, not by Antonio Tarver.

Not so much in terms of ATG standing but he would have been ranked very high by many, top 30 or possibly top 20, if he retired after the first Tarver fight.

I have read posts of people saying Jones has no heart....

That would be the number one fight I would tell them to watch...

I had the fight even after 10...

Roy had been sucking wind and on unsteady legs since the first round, and taken a lot of punishment.

He showed a lot of heart in those last 2 rounds that he clearly won in my opinion.

People that say he didn't have a plan B, or no heart, obviously forgot about that fight.:yep

I know Maxim did it as well, even though he didn't win against Charles, who could blame him?

    My gripe is this...

He still was losing to fighters that he was twice as fast as, and he still had power and could throw punches well.

Ya, so he wasnt 10 times faster like he was in his prime, but to me it says something when you have to be soooooo much faster and more powerful then your opponent to win the fight.

He was looking superb against Tarver in their rematch, theres no reason he should have gotten his ass kicked as badly as he did against johnson, and the third tarver fight? he could have won the trilogy of his career had he gone out there and taken it, but he didnt, he let it slide and let tarver off the hook.

So im kinda down the middle on this.

Yes, of course i dont count the Green and Hopkins fights against Roy, thats absurd, and Roy is truly gone at this point.

However, the second Tarver fight, third Tarver fight, and the Johnson fight, yes.... i do count against him....

Many fighters show their greatness by competing past their peak, when the things that made them great physically have slowly been widdled away by time, yet because of their greatness, they remain competetive (toney, duran, ali, frazier) and even continue to shine (Hopkins, Lewis)

So i dont know, i dont make it a make or break thing for roy at all, but i dont just disregard it eather (tarver 2, GJ, tarver 3).

But of course, Roy in his prime was superman no doubt, and nothing undoes his accomplishments eather. that i agree with.

:goodsame with people saying he never dealt with pressure or someone who wasn't afraid of him before johnson. he did and there were those who weren't afraid of him...he just won. bryan brannon was one of my favourite roy victories cause it shows what he could do against a pressure, swarmer (brannon may not have been all that good but still)

i can agree with this post. he did get by too much on his talent and that was one of his big flaws: he never developed the skills needed to compete once his athleticism faded. still, roys drop was more drastic than i'd ever seen and within the span of 3 fights he went from best in the world to maybe 60% of his best...then to 15% now.

That is what makes Roy special....

In his prime he defied the very things that most boxers were trained to do because he was so fast, and had such fast reflexes....

You can even watch him in his prime, he left himself open a lot, but either his reflexes were to fast or the fighter was not fast enough to catch him there....

When I look at Roy's downfall, I thought he lost that one millisecond of superior reflexes, that left him wide open for a counter. It was all downhill from there in my eyes.

Tyson has been shot for about 7 years too(about 99-2005) and knocked out but that didn't eliminate the fact that he still holds the reord for being he youngest hvy. Wait about ten years we'll all be talking about "Oh RJJJ is in the HOF" and what not and not even pay attention to his career post-Ruiz or Tarver 1. His painful performances now don't eliminate his past greatness, nor will they ever.

Truefully I think most of Roy's problems is in his head. The Defense the he employs today is what gets him in trouble, along with the fact that he doesn't throw combinations anymore. It time for him to retire, you can't tarnish the action that he gave us while he was on top. Just go on youtube and look at his highlights and then realize that what you have seen is just a small part and there's much much more.
