roy jones is one of those guys like tyson with near perfect highlight reels but like you said, there's more to his story. it's not just the knockouts. it's the fact that he rarely lost rounds in his prime let alone fights
What makes MY opinion irrelevant? It's just my opinion. But for the record, I only hate Roy Jones circa 2007-2010.
I agree with OP, however it's the standard for a champion to give 110%. If you go out with some fight left if in ya, you didn't give enough imo. Look at Joe and Lennox. We know they could of went on fighting but they retired to preserve glory. I'm wondering where the glory is in pulling out of a fight.
I like Roy as the greatest fighter in history on a Head to Head, Pound for Pound basis. Roy at 168lbs was ridiculous.
Is Tyson going to be remembered for his McBride fight ?His KO losses to Holyfield and Lewis or will he be remembered for the beast that he once was 5 yrs from now ? Why is it that Roy's legacy gets tarnished more so than any other fighter whose done pretty much the same thing before they hung them up ? What was he that good that you couldn't wait to hate on the man the minute he looked vulnerable?? His legacy remains in tact .The one blemish will always be that he fought too long...Honestly who's career can even come close to his if his legacy is really that tarnished ?
We as fans maybe think this would be the best for his record/legacy. On the other hand, think of how much more money he has made by continuing to fight until now. Sometimes money is just too much to think about legacies and how fans will view you.
Yea because Roy Jones Jr. is the first great boxer to box for too long. I'm sure he will be the last as well.
Really Mike Tyson bit a Man's ear off in the ring yet Roy's legacy is more tarnished?:huh Come ten yrs from now Roy and Tyson will still be regarded as two of the most amazing boxers to have ever laced them up ..
Have to wait years for people to appreciate what Roy has given us. People have fresh in their minds what he has done last, which is suffer embarrassing loses -- but you judge a fighter BY THEIR PRIME YEARS, this is a damn rule. Most of the greats fought wayy past their prime, some brutally KO'd and embarrassedly defeated. Roy is not exempt from being a human being who in his head thinks he is the same fighter he was. Consciousness really does not change like a physical body, what you were when you were 20, although you can change in wisdom and knowledge, you still are the same "I". Being a type who was invested in the physical prime of the body, to have it no longer function as it did when you were at your best is devastating. It's sad, but it happens often to the best.
Terrible thread. You act like Jones is the only one that is fighting too long after he's not the same fighter. Have you ever heard of Ali? Leonard? Duran? Holyfield? Tyson? <<<Those legends have done the same like Roy is doing. Hell Holyfield is still freaking fighting.
If one of these guys is considered the GOAT, the other the GOAT HW, the other the GOAT LW and usually ranked in the top 10 all-time p4p, it's safe to say that going on too long only does minimal, if any, damage to your legacy.
