Thing is when the books are written he will still be among the greatest. Did Thomas Hearns tarnish his career? the fraud Chavez sr. didnt tarnish his and I dont think RJJ tarnished his either. First of all we know he beat B-Hop when it mattered. All his losses(besides M.G) were after he went up to HW and came back down. I dont believe Tarver, Johnson, Calzaghe, Green could have beat him at anytime during his prime career so thats it. B-Hop MIGHT have been able to but fact remains they didnt fight and when they did in their younger years RJJ won..so thats all that can be said. He is still an ATG by just about anyone who knows boxing and to me his losses just mean he fought for too long, thats it. At least he wasnt scared to take L's.

 

in this case he has tarnished his career. on the big stage he has lost several times where younger people will remember him for losing more than for winning.

 

Hearns fought on much longer than Ray. Ray was odd. He fought when he was older and had excuses more than when he was young. He retired at 25, and then didn't have another big fight until he was almost 31. Almost like if he lost he would have an excuse for the loss. Had he lost at 26, no one would have said he was old. But Hearns had good wins after getting older.

 

Ali beat greater fighters in his prime than Jones did, and Jones had fought better guys when he got older. Sort of like Leonard. They fight tougher guys when they get older so they have an excuse if they lose. If they win, well they beat a good guy when they got older.

 

its a well known fact that hes been washed up for years now anyway so these losses hardly affect his historical rankings. you can always make the case that rjj, in his prime was never defeated, not including a dq loss to Griffin which he avenged with a brutal 1st rd ko. however his overall competition will always be criticized with reason. his career being tarnished isnt the main issue, his health is.

 

He's not tarnished, but he keeps fighting, and when they show highlights of him losing rather than winning, it keeps the losses in the minds of young folk who don't know how good Jones used to be...

The 2 greatest fighters on Jones' resume were fought when Jones was young.

 

I wish that he stopped after the Ruiz or Tarver and even if he continued than after the Lacy fight would be appropriate. A good show in Florida and where he showed flashes of his old self.

Call me crazy but I think I would love him to fight a farewell fight in Pensacola with a Omar Sheika kinda fighter because it hurts for me to see that he stops his great career after 2 losses. If he fought a last time in his hometown in front of his fans

 

Which tougher guys did Jones fight when he got older? Calzaghe? Green? Tarver?

I highly doubt he waited till he was older for as an excuse to lose to Calzaghe.

Tarver would have got his shot at Jones much sooner if Harding didn't break his jaw.

Johnson is looked at as a really good fighter now, but if you look at it, Roy has feasted on many fighters in his career on Johnson's level.

I don't buy the Jones fought tougher opponents as he got older argument. Jones just got older, the competition was relatively the same

Just a few Names of Fighters who fought too Long. No says there Legacy is Tarnished by the Loses they suffered when they was way past there Prime. Whys Roy Different?

If you had seen how good Roy used to be, you would have realized he was no longer that man.

 

Everyone knows he was past it when he took those loses(KO's).Maybe not the first Tarver KO,but after that he was steady on the decline.

IMO it doesn't realy effect what he had accomplished in his prime.
