Don't know if this has been posted. Bernard was a guest on the Calvin Murphy show today, and Roy Jones called in about half way through. A long argument ensued. Hopkins wants 60-40, Roy Jones wants 60 to winner, 40 to the loser. Hard to argue with that. http://www.975theticket.com/TicketO...yPodcasts2/tabid/807/ItemId/1078/Default.aspx
This 60-40 thing is really a fight in itself, if they ever agree to fight, whoevers terms its on has atleast a win in this rivalry. If its 60-40 Hopkins they are 1-1 with eachother and the fight itself would be the rubbermatch. If its 60-40 winner, than Roy is 2-0 and really has nothing to lose in the fight.
Roy would be stupid to take this fight, because he has everything to lose there. Let's face it, Roy looked good against Jeff Lacy, but no way he can do that against B-Hop. Yes, B-Hop is older, but still he does have more left than Roy - I see him beating Roy this time. Roys biggest wins remain Toney and Hopkins, if B-Hop would win in a rematch much of Roys first win would be somewhat tainted, people would say 'well Hopkins was just too green back then' (while he had more pro fights than Roy) and so on, and it would hurt Roys legacy. Don't get me wrong, I do want Roy to take a risky fight now, yes, but I'd rather see him face the winner of Glen Johnson-Chad Dawson II. I want to see him avenging his KO loss to Glen Johnson, that would do more to his legacy than facing B-Hop again.
Jones needs to retire, i'm dead serious, let's face it the ghost of roy jones is all we have left.......roy please retire hopkins wins a wide UD if it happens, and it should be 60-40 hopkins.....hopkins is coming off a huge ppv win over the lineal middleweight champ of the world pavlik, and a SD loss to calzaghe who some feel he won.....hopkins is right to want the 60
Jones should get 40. Hops is more relevant now. Hops beat Pavlik not too long ago. However in the past, Jones should've got the 60 and hops the 40 and I believe Jones would've beat him again back then when they had there little debate on HBO back in 02. Now, I don't see Jones winning, but it is possible. I just don't know, he could get KO'd.
I'm listening to this **** now, and I noticed that B-Hop claimed he's never been down in his career, while in truth he has been down twice (against Mercado). Also, he said he never fought at LHW before facing Tarver, but it's a fact that he started his career at LHW and SMW. Not that it matters much, but he should keep to the facts.
Honestly, stylistically, Hopkins isn't much of a threat to Jones. I dunno where a lot of you get off saying Hopkins would whoop Jones. Hopkins is a counter puncher. He isn't aggressive at all. At best this would be a somewhat boring fight, and Roy Jones would have the advantage due to his speed and style. Hopkins isn't going to be in Jones chest trying to knock him out. Lets be serious here.
hopkins might be more relevant, but its him that lost the first fight, he should seek the small amount of redemption this fight has, rather then worrying about money, when he is already rich
at this point it seems jones needs this fight more then hopkins.....seriously, jones is done on the big stage, and hopkins is heading that direction as well.....makes sense for jones to seek a big pay day for a hopkins fight.... I think hopkins wins a wide UD at this point, i dont think hopkins can stop jones, but it will be one-sided, with jones maybe doing well early....
60 to the winner makes sense. Is Jones a shot fighter? Yes but in drawing power the ppv buys of both fighters these days are not good but drawing the tickets sells, Jones wins it easily even if Jones face a fighter many expert he'll win easily. So again 60 to the winner and the 40 percent to the loser makes sense.
Bernard could throw us all a curve and put some pressure on Roy, and let his hands go - but that's not really old man Hopkins, now is it? It can be of course.. But it's a bit more likely Hopkins would allow Jones to stand, and have a chess match with him - and Roy Jones lives for breathing room. I'd pick Hopkins, but it could have a little intrigue. More if I think about it.
