he grant going the way of team elite. i believe there's room for you to start posting on the current boxing forum. all those fighters you listed would have got their ass handed to them at 168 by jones. they all knew it as well. you know how the euros operate. look at the careers of dariusz, calzaghe and erdei for starters. here merchant, one of the greatest jones haters, explaining why jones moved up to 175. kmac, no need to get your panties in a bunch. I simply posed a question. I am interested in educated feedback not knee jerk responses from posters suffering menstrual cramps.
If you want to debate any of the points do so, I've made go forth and do so, otherwise stop making uninformed posts. There were better opponents than the 3 worst you picked out of the 20 opponents fought over the period, wow no ****. Just because Jones didn't everyone, doesn't mean he avoided them, many avoided him or wanted a kings ransom to make the fights. As Kmac pointed out fights were offered to these boxers Honestly watch Collins or Darius fight and come back with a straight face and say he ducked them :nut BTW here's his offer to Don King and Nigel Benn In September of '95 Jones dispatched Tony Thornton with something like 25 unanswered punches, Jones made a suitably bizarre dedication: "This is for everyone in the chicken business!" But he also had a bit to say about Nigel Benn. "You go tell Don King i'll take that fight [Benn] anytime! Nigel Benn is a great warrior and that's why I want to fight him!" The problem was that Benn was with King. King wanted Jones to sign a "winning options" clause. Though Jones was happy to work with King for the right amount of dollar, he, and perhaps to an even greater degree, Stanley Levin (something to do with Roy's management team - don't know his exact role, he seems to be mostly labelled as a "advisor"?) did not want any part of Don long term, and you absolutley cannot blame them for that. Furthermore, King was determined that a fight this big should be on Showtime, Jones was connected to HBO. Later, Jones was interviewed by Claude Abrahams for Boxing News: "I hear about King offring $25m for me and Benn. Instead, he can come up with $10m apiece and we can fight [without giving up long-term control]. I want a three fight package!" Jones's "three fight package" wasn't a long-term deal for King, but rather an idea whereby he would come to England but not alone. "My bros must go with me. I must have some cover if I go to another country. Bruno-[Alfred] Cole would be a good fight. Let's make it a great night. I've seen Hamed. He's a pretty good fighter but [Derek] Gainer watched the fight against Robinson, he says he can beat him. Derrick don't turn no-one down. Bruno can punch but Cole has more skill. That will balance it out into a good fight. Me and Benn - enough said. I like Benn and that's why I want to fight him. It's a sportsman's challenge. But they can't speak for themselves. They can't make their own decisions without King. They can't make their own decisions. We can. They don't have the power. They are denying the public some great fights. I really like the big challanges. When I fought Toney it was a project. Benn is a project because he is a warrior and it will be a test for me. I really believe Benn wants to fight me. I respect him." Several things strike me about this. Firstly, I believe Roy was up for this. That strikes me. Do you? Or just bombast? Secondly, he really seems bored with the Sosas of this world. I think it screams of the page that he wants to be challenged. Thirdly, Jones shows real give. He doesn't make problems. Read between the lines. He's talking about coming to the UK AND taking a pay cut in this passage. I don't think you can hold it against him that he didn't want to sell his soul to the devil. Of course it never came off. After the Sosa fight Jones said: "Boxing isnt a challenge for me no more. The only challenge is Benn and he don't return my phone calls." You can see the boredom. Benn, for his part, was probably not the problem. After the Nardiello fight talking to Ian Darke: "Roy Jones...I don't mind being second to Roy Jones. I think he's a class act. I'd really like to fight him. He'll frighten me. That's what I need - somebody to really frighten me. I'd be up for that fight like a mother...so please, God, Don King, Frank ****** HBO, if you can get that fight i'll fight him in his - no, my back yard. Roy Jones is the only one who's gonna give me that real fear. He's going to put the fear of God up me."
you even post responses like the chumps on the current boxing forum. i don't know why you'd post this question when you have your mind already made up. powerpuncher has posted some good info but then it's just said that he's biased so i guess his posts don't count. ok, jones ducked everyone on his way to being the best fighter of his era. there you go, hope you feel better.
PowerPuncher is either being Jones ambassador in return 4 interviews / something like it or a part of Jones team / promotion company . His worst posts (and nearly half of them) come when Jones is in discussion . Every1 who is interested about d truth will ignore PowerPuncher whenever Jones or 1 of his opponents is d subject of a discussion . **** posts by PowerPuncher . Jones said himself he will never fight McClellan in d pros after McClellan owned his ass in d amateurs . Frankie Liles beat him in d amateurs , even Tim Littles did . Jones fought a 41 McCallum who did not beat Steve Collins years earlier . Jones fought a drained 2 death Toney who could barely remain upright even without any fight in fron of him . Jones avoided Steve Collins and Reggie Johnson (whom also did not beat Steve Collins) until they grew old & shot & in Collins' case it was so shot that he was advised that another fight may risk his very life . Collins collapsed in a sparing session while being 1 of d toughest of his era in his prime . Even Tarver who destroyed Jones was older than him . Even Glen Johnson who knocked his ass out was Jones' age . Pazienza was 7 years older & a former lightweight , what a feat , Ya'll must have forgot . Jorge Vaca , a former welterweight & 10 years older was supposed 2 fight Jones @ 154 . Jones came in @ 156 . Old , shot , dwarfed and deceived Vaca got knocked out , another highlight 4 Jones . Jones called out Terry Norris after d fight . Virgil Hill , what n ATG , previously outpointed by a 6 years older and a former welterweight in Thomas Hearns and then by Michalczewski . 5 years older than Jones , Hill was KOd by a body punch . 1 must wonder what would happen if it was a past prime Jones vs a prime Hill , or a drained 2 death (which he never was , not even vs Tarver) Jones vs Toney of d Barkley fight . Or a 41 Jones vs a 28 years old Mike McCallum , wait , Jones had a huge mass advantage even then . And then there was d stellar Hopkins performance , as bad as Delahoya vs Trinidad . Jones & Hopkins r not even top 30 p4p , Jones rarely fought live bodies in his prime , and when he did , they had 2b much smaller or at least have some very serious hindrance . Montell gave Jones hell , Jones fouled & got rightfully DQd 4 it . In d rematch , Jones' party made sure Griffin will have his big hindrance 2 by not allowing him 2 get himself warmed . Griffin was rushed in2 d ring cold and got KOd . Nother highlight 4 Jones . And then come a 14 years older Thulani Malinga (1 year older than McCallum) - another highlight 4 Jones . Tony Thornton , 10 years older - another highlight 4 Jones . And Merqui Sosa , made Jones punch himself out only 2 get stopped by a corrupt referee who had 2 give Sosa a standing 8 count according 2d local rules , but instead , stopped d fight . Something fishy ? Jones ? never . Just ask PowerPuncher/BodyHead/Commando - he knows d truth . I could go on and on , but I suppose some understand .
I would have liked to have seen Jones vs. Benn, Eubank, Michalczewski, Nunn, Rocchigiani, Byrd, Toney II (at HW), and maybe a few others. Jones would have been favored more times than not though.
