Roy Jones ATG Placing Post Ruiz, Heavyweight Title Defence.

He was never really a heavyweight champ though, he held a belt after one fight and then scarpered.

A question for the historians, when Jones got the WBA belt, who held the others?

 

Are you talking in his time, or overall? I'm not sure he was peerless, I still think his resume is a little lacking in retrospect. Massively talented, but I think that loss to Griffin tells us a lot - he could be outhustled, he could be shaken up. In fairness, he came out in the rematch very differently to the Mouthpiece Hamlet Budd Schulberg thought he was.

 

Corriue sanders beat wlad for the title a week or two after. Hard to see Roy beating any of them, Ruiz was definitely the weakest link.

The win made Jones only the second man to win middleweight and heavyweight titles after Fitzsimmons. But does he deserve it?

 

course he does, he had the skill and balls to do it.

Wlad way too tall and too much reach advantage.

RJJ vs anyone around his height and weight he has a real chance against IMO.

 

Watch the fight, don't google it. Read the reports at the time - Jones was struggling with Griffin, he didn't like the pressure and was making all sorts of amateur mistakes. Funnily enough, the same things that let Johnson and Tarver flatten him.

Anyway, he was taking over, no doubt, but he was not "whooping" anyone. Here's what Schulberg said:

"(Griffin) was giving Jones the first competitive fight of his charmed (and too easy) professional life, and at the end of eight our scorecard had it dead even... Round nine... A confused, frustrated or overwrought Roy Jones blew the fight it had taken him a long night of catch-up to get even."

Roy Boy's have slowly rewritten history to exclude the mess Jones was in. He was taking shots, getting bullied. Merchant asked him post fight whether he'd fouled Griffin because he'd been so frustrated. 100% legitimate win for Griffin.

 

Seen it mate, good while back like. The way the rematch went down, I dont think RJJ trained for 1st bout.

 

Nah, he just got caught out. And he's not as good as many like to make out.

 

Never Seen much of Byrd to be honest, I just think he would have been KO'd in his next couple of fights much like what happened at light heavy.
