Roy's commentary is pretty spot on in a technical stand point. I just can't understand the guy half the time.
He may be accurate, but he nut hugs too much, sounds annoying, and it's hard to understand what he's saying. Jim might be off sometimes, but he has a great voice for commentating. Merchant, Lampley and Stewart Aka The Sandman are my favorites.
Good news. Now all they need to do is replace Bob Papa. No, but he was used as an Italian interpreter in between rounds when Cotto fought Gianluca Branco, since he was in Puerto Rico and scheduled to fight Cotto a few months afterwards.
Just way too many really strange sentences and never ending them, just leaving them open ended "If he can keep on the distance and keep throwing those hands from the outside..." .. and then nothing. Silence for 10 seconds and then one of the other commentators took over And also the infamous "Absolutely" reply to *EVERY QUESTION* the other commentators bring to him. Like "Lennox, is it business as usual for the champ when you come into a fight like this and the challenger appears so confident?" Lennox: "Absolutely". And then.. SILENCE!!!" The best though was when he compared Dirrell (!) to Ali I think HBO must have received millions of hate letters asking for Lennox' dismissal on that one alone. Lennox as a commentator sometimes behaved like he smoked a really good joint right before the show, totally out there.
Great! Im really happy to hear it, he will add some life back to HBO boxing and be a voice of reason. Best move by HBO and Roy in a long time.
Lennox doesn't sound very intelligent when he speaks. I don't miss him. George Foreman was a lot of fun to listen to. Roy, I don't really care for. Plus he ditched out on the fighter meetings before. Tarver does a good job. I like him. Hopkins does a good job, IMO. I think he would be a better choice than Roy. Jermain Taylor would also be a good commentator. Someone should give him a chance. Merchant I fast forward through unless he's talking to a fighter. Lampley says so many crazy things unintentionally, he keeps me laughing. Steward has so much inside info and boxing knowledge I listen to him, but he's biased towards/against certain fighters. Kellerman knows his stuff but just looks like a DB. Turn down the intensity a couple notches Max. Atlas is usually good in his fight plans, showing he knows the fighters and the sport, and he doesn't give a **** what anyone thinks. I like him, but his analogies are goofy.
Great news. I've always enjoyed Roy's charismatic insights. Hopefully he'll get some WCB and PPV assignments as well.
