ROY JONES' biggest problem right after TARVER II was his psyche, not his reflexes !!

Jones' athleticism started to slowly fade from around 2001-2002. Of course Jones was a shell of his peak self after Tarver I, but his mental break down is what hurt him the most as far as I'm concerned. He still had enough natural tools and skills to dominate the Tarvers of this world but his lack of confidence took over.

For any of you that have competed to a certain level in sports, no matter how talented you are, you know that confidence is a major key to performing at the highest possible level. Without it, performances become automatically ordinary or sub par.

This round in Jones-Tarver III perfectly shows Jones capable of delivering...but holding back on many occasions when it's time to unleash, a clear sign that he had mentally lost his edge...

He was mentally messed up in the Johnson fight. He just stood there and Glen did his thing eventually knocking him out. Second fight Jones didnt have it in him anymore and thats how its been.

It applies to basically everything in life but in sports, a mental break down is definitely a performance killer !

Johnson & Tarver even at that stage should have been easy enough wins for even a faded Jones. That's why when people only say that Jones was physically shot, I disagree cause at that point, post Tarver II, his biggest problem was between the ears, not physical !!

    Totally agree

Jones is my boy though I wish Tarver I had been more convincing and Jones had left the sport no matter how much his resume could be picked apart we would be talking top 20 ATG.

Hell of an avvy BTW who is she?

Jones should have retired after tarver 1 or atleast 2. when you lose confidence in yourself there is no point in fighting longer and ****ing up your legacy.

Bit of both most likely. Your mentality affects you physiologically.

In a bizarre turn of events, I actually think that after the Jones-Lacy fight, he was mentally much better but it only took 1 minute, 1 punch and another KO against Green to shatter his confidence again, which made him totally gun shy with Hopkins !!

I think he only had 230 punches thrown in the Hopkins fight...with most being meaningless.

Well that's what I'm saying. I think that he was still fine physically to beat the Tarvers & Johnsons of this world but mentally, he evidently wasn't.

When that happens, no matter how old you are, your performance is hindered in return.

I've never seen Roy Jones lose a fight he TRIED to win. I kinda agree that while he isn't anywhere near what he was in his prime. He still has tools far beyond alot of boxers today. Watching him fight now is like watching somebody holding a rocket launcher but they won't fire it. I feel like he coulda beat Tarver the 3rd time but he didn't fight. Same thing in the rest of his losses past that. Idk what's up.

I think if jones reall put a effort in in he could have won, hopkins is insecure when it comes to jones, he was rather quiet before the fight and at the weigh in, he looked good for a few rounds then opened his back of tricks to get roy dq´d, I still gave roy 5 rounds if I remember correctly, mostly because after round 4 a lot of what b-hop did was whine and fake. That fight should have never happened though.
What I dont get is, roy has/had a good legacy, has made plenty of cash and has a follow up job as a commentator which he is great at. why does he continue to humiliate himself by losing to guys he would have dominated in his prime.
