Depends on your own definition of ATG. I don't think of him as an ATG, I don't think he will be remembered as a true ATG in 20 or 30 years, no chance. His resume just doesn't cut it for ATG status IMO. He'll be an ATG in the UK, but not in boxing as a sport.

    I agree, almost.

Calzaghe will probably be remembered as a super middle all time great but how much weight will that carry?

Like PACFAN said, he wont be remembered as a true ATG.

I could go a little deeper than Roy did on this one, but for the most part I would have to agree.

Some Americans wouldn't have Nigel Benn as an ATG but i have him and Eubank above Calzaghe.

How many fighters, roughly speaking, should qualify from each weight class?

The reason I ask is because I think 30 guys from each weight class being "Great" is a bit too much.

That would equal to something like 200-300 ATG's.

It depends how you define 'ATG'.

He will be remembered as one of the finest fighters of this era and as of now, he is the greatest SMW of all time.

He is a top 10 British fighter of all time.

He is in my opinion a top 100 fighter of all time.

However, in terms of fighters that can be instantly recalled on the basis of their tremendous achievements that often transcend weight classes, he will not be viewed as being on a par with the likes of say Spinks, Charles, Monzon or a Leonard or Duran...he is not on that level.

What I mean by this is that people don't exclusively think 'damn that Leonard was a great WW' they think 'that Leonard was a great fighter' full stop.

An example of the opposite is saying say that George Foreman is an ATG HW....but he is confined to that...ATG HW....he doesn't factor into any top 10 p4p fighter of all time arguments or anything like that....

Guys like Hagler transcend their weight class....I can't say that Joe has done enough to merit being mentioned alongside the likes of them.

Nonetheless, he has had a terrific career and can be happy with his lot for the most part.

As it stands now, Roy is top 75 and Calzaghe is around top 150.

Is this the same Roy Jones who said Calzaghe was one of the best five fighters ever?

...He must have meant "one of the best five European fighters ever", then, right?

RJJ is making a fool of himself, presumably trying to sell this fight.
