jones was fine during the fight. it's hard to find something good to say and analyze a fight when both fighters suck.
When Roy started talking about his personal quest to find an american heavyweight that can excite the division, I was terrified he was about to suggest himself.
I was left with the impression he was in fact talking about himself. Then Lampley wisely and quickly changed the topic.
Roy is alright . Tarver does a great job at showtime. HBO commentary can be very biased , not really professional at all imo. . But that's also what makes it entertaining.
I'd like to see Chris Byrd commentating, especially for Klitschko fights. He's fought both of them, can speak intelligently and clearly, former HW champ, not so stuck on talking about his own accomplishments when asked about something else. It would be a decent move for HBO.
Out of all the US commentary on boxing events for me nothing beats when Larry Merchant, Jim Lampley, and George Foreman are acting as commentators for a fight. Not a fan of the Shotime guys.
RJJ does quality analysis. He sees what's really going on in the ring. He's by no means infallible, but he speaks very well about specific dynamics, the punches being thrown, etc.
Tarver shattered his glass jaw and he's far better at their new job on the mic. He should go show him how to **** his old lady now and he'll have dominated him at all facets of life.
Jones is not a good commentator. The god talk is terrible to listen to. Merchant is the only guy on point. I think fight fans have a soft spot for Jones because they were possibly fans at one point or another.
that is one of the worst things fighters do when they get older, compare everyone to themselves or how they would beat that guy. Leonard was pretty good in staying objective, although even he would say some ridiculous stuff.
Didn't see the fight, but Jones used to be a very good commentator on HBO in the mid to late 90s. There are some ex-fighters who are surprisingly good, Shannon Briggs comes to mind. Joe Mesi would be another.
