Even with all the recent losses do you still rank him as highly or not? Ive heard some people say hes passed his best (obviously) so these losses dont really count....if thats the case surely we cant give hopkins credit for his victories as hes past his best also? why does it work one way but not the other. dont get me wrong, i like jones, why he feels the need to carry on is beyond me, especially in places like russia...but surely you cant pass these defeats off now as nothing but basically 'post real-career' fights if hopkins still gets credit?

The loses count; I guess RJJ's legacy has to be viewed the same as Evander Holyfield's. There's the prime Roy Jones, and the disconnected-from-reality Roy Jones. His reluctance to step it up caused his demise. Another undeniable fact is that Tarver was the wrong match for him when he was aging. If he had better fundamentals, Roy could have had as long productive career as Floyd can have too. Age takes away athleticism, but technique, preparation and experience can't be denied (see: Bernard).

Victories past your best count while losses dont, thats the position your in when your far past your prime.
Explain to me why jones losing hurts his legacy but it doesnt for duran and ali, this is my usual question on this topic but I never really get a real asnwer on it.

To me, Hopkins has surpassed Roy in terms of greatness/legacy...

Because I rank Roy still where I ranked him about 2005-2006, these last 5-6 years don't really count.
With Hopkins, I rank him higher and higher as long as he stays competitive with or even beats the worlds very best.

H2H, a prime Roy always beats a prime Hopkins tho.

Hopkins is the definition of an overachiever.

Leonard was embarrased at 36, Roy at 35 with a lucky punch which caused his downfall.
Leonard is still highly regarded tho

  6. The thing with Jones is, his Chin is made of Wet Toilet Paper.

RJJ stayed way too long for his own good. He should have retired after he won the HW belt. If he did that, his ranking would be higher in a lot of people's eyes.

In his prime, he was near enough untouchable and we are talking about great and very good fighters who couldn't beat him. If you compare him to the fab 4, Hearns and SRL would have the best chance but he would KO Hearns in the later rounds and SRL would go either way. He would beat Hagler to a close UD and KO Duran.

I will die thinking and honestly believing he was one of the greatest fighters of all time. How history or so called boxing historians rank him is irrelevant to me. He wasnt a great fighter anymore at the end of his career, I accept that, but it has no bearing on anything he accomplished in his prime and at his best. Even great musicians make some horrible music when there best days are behind them, but their masterpieces remain untouchable. Roy has one of the greatest highlight reels in boxing history.

People talk the biggest pile of garbage about RJJ that they've all forgotten how amazing he really was in his peak. If he came back in his peak, he would literally steam roll over everyone from Middle to Cruiser. He would put a huge beatdown on old man Hopkins on the way through.....

Spot on. Stevie Wonder wrote some masterpieces in the 60s and 70s which influenced the majority of black R&B, Soul and Hip Hop artists of today. His 80s stuff was ok but crap in comparison. I mean, "Ebony and Ivory", f'in hell!!!
