Calzaghe had tremendously fast wrists. More torque on his wrists than anyone. He would unleash a fusillade of pitty-pat that could suffocate his opponent by way of oxygen depletion. But when we talk of hand-speed we're really talking about arms. Jones had far, far, faster punches in that sense. The comparison with Calzaghe is, I suspect, a combination of envy and wishful thinking.
How could I forget Ali ??? And this is a heavyweight we`re talking about. They say prime Clay actually had a faster jab than SRR. They measured it by the amount of frames it tokk to capture Cal`y jab and SRR. Thaought it said that it took 7 or 8 frames for SRR and only 6 1/2 for Clay...
There are a few incredible people in every decade. The 90's had Roy and Iron Mike. Now we have Pac and Floyd. Some people are just born to do certain things. I don't think Iron Mike was necessarily born to box but he needed a place to unload on people and not go to jail for it at the time. Iron Mike would've been a BETTER MMA fighter. Imagine Mike getting somebody in a chokehold... no I guess I wouldn't want to imagine that.
The issue with roys style is this: When your feet leave the ground (in a forward motion in this case) you can not longer use them for dodging and stability. Roy fought with his hands down so he was always at risk for beind blasted. Now- it also increased his strikes power because power is generated beginning from the feet (which is why you pivot your foot for hook and things like that) So, while it left him more susceptible to being hit cleanly and hard, his already freakish power was amplified by the gamble of the maneuver. This kind of fighting also is why roy has so many impressive knockouts(IMO). But from a technical standpoint, and on an average fighter, a fighter fighting like roy should be suspect to just as impressive LOSSes.
Another thing that convolutes this speed comparison is that without a doubt Roy and Floyd (maybe the best versions of Hearns, too) are way way way less busy in a round than Pac, young Camacho, Taylor, and Calzaghe. Sugar Ray leonard and Pac probably belong in a category above Camacho and Calzaghe because they actually had sting. None of Calzaghe's punches have blinding speed and power, but they are quick and the sheer volume of his constant movement makes you classify him as a quick guy, when really there is none of that explosive "Oh snap, I didn't even see that!" that you get from Roy and to a much lesser extent from the prime Pretty Boy of say the Corrales fight. For sure, Roy is the biggest fastest puncher who had power and was not very busy, every shot counted. Its impossible to factor in the power aspect, because I am pretty sure that Camacho and Pernell have at one time thrown a punch that was faster than anything Roy's ever thrown, the difference is, when the punch landed the other fighter probably didn't even notice, either. When Roy landed his fastest shot, I'm almost sure the other fighter suddenly found himself on the canvas thinking "What?" if he was thinking at all. The only guys with awesome work rate, speed, and accurate power are like Leonard and Pac, where it all comes together. Hearns would stand around looking at you a whole lot, as will Floyd and Roy. Khan is too inaccurate to be considered at this stage in his development, though his raw speed is of course exceptional too.
If someone said to me they thought Roy Jones Jr had the fastest handspeed of all time, i would respect their opnion and probably agree with them.
Easy to look quick when you're roided up to the gunnels and fighting newyork traffic enforcers for a living.
