Eubank would have been a tough fight for Roy. But Eubank wasn’t interested in fighting Roy, and the WBO wasn’t respected back then.
It depends what the circumstances were. He was capable of obtaining the belt which Wilder won. He wouldn’t have been able to have beaten the top guys though.
You’re basically penalising him for being too good. The Ruiz fight was boring because it wasn’t interesting. Roy just cruised by him. Which means he doesn’t get much credit. But despite Ruiz having the one of the ugliest styles we’ve ever seen, he was still a top 10 HW. If he was around today, he’d also be a top 10-15 HW. Now if he wasn’t you have to question why even a faded version of Evander etc didn’t crush him. I don’t care who the fighter is, any former MW who beats any top 10 HW with ease, deserves respect. We can’t just say: “But he didn’t fight Lennox....” How many of his SMW-LHW contemporary would have beaten Ruiz that easy? There won’t be a long list. That was a great win for a 34 year old former MW who’d had 50 fights. People say he had a glass jaw. Okay, so wasn’t it great to beat a world class HW who was 230 pounds? You say it was like watching him toy with limited LHW’s like Woods. Yet Woods went and split 3 fights with Glen Johnson who proved he could be a handful at the weight.
Every fighter has different circumstances due to their styles etc. Having 50 fights at 35 is a lot for a fighter with Roy’s style. How was Tarver a limited fighter?
Yes, really. 100%. Bernard had great longevity. And that deserves enormous respect. But he only pushed himself after he was 40, when he was in a position where he had everything to gain and nothing to lose. He spent most of his career beating naturally smaller fighters in a weak division. He has the marquee wins with names over Tito and Oscar, but they weren’t as good as Roy’s best wins. His win over Tarver was his greatest, but Tarver may well have been drained. Mackie Shilstone who helped Bernard prepare for Tarver, said so at the time. Pavlik was an outstanding performance for his age, but it wasn’t at MW. I don’t give him much credit for the Winky win, as it was fought at LHW when Winky was a career JMW. I give him huge props for pushing Calzaghe. His win over Pascal was very impressive, but mainly due to his age. I also have huge respect for him for fighting Kovalev at such an advanced age. The second part of his career was great. But in his prime, he wouldn’t move up to fight better fighters at SMW and LHW. He also wouldn’t rematch Roy for a huge career high pay day at a 168 C-W. He turned it down to target the JMW champs instead. When he got to the LHW division, Roy had already been there for a decade. All in all he had a great career. But again, until he was at an advanced age, he didn’t fight the guys that Roy did, he didn’t take the risks that Roy did, and he didn’t pursue the calibre of fighters that Roy did. He also didn’t accomplish what Roy did. There’s also his horrible spoiling and play acting antics to consider. At the end of the day, IMHO, fighting and beating naturally bigger fighters, is far more impressive than fighting naturally smaller fighters. Despite Bernard’s great longevity and how Roy fell fast and hard, Roy definitely has the better overall resume.
But the WBF, IBA, IBO, IBC and other trinket belts Glass Jaw Roy paraded around with for so many years were? You contradict yourself on here all the time. You suggest other fighters do things but it’s completely ok for Roy not to do them. Jones was a business man not a fighter. And a bad one at that since he ended up essentially broke. Jones had no intentions of daring to be great and taking big time fights. Hopkins did. Toney did. Heck even Tarver did. There are too many questions left about Roy’s career because he was too reluctant to try and answer them.
Those belts didn't DQ him from other rankings like holding the WBO did. And while he did hold low level belts, he wasn't adhering to their mandatory challengers.
We’re looking at when he was at SMW with his IBF belt. His objective at the time, was to fight for the WBA and the WBC belts. When he couldn’t get those fights, he moved up to LHW. Why would he have pursued a WBO belt holder in Britain who was fighting guys like Schommer and Close etc? Nobody cares about those other lesser belts. He never fought mandatories or celebrated winning them even when he was shot. He never proclaimed himself to be a CW champion. As usual, you’re posts are nonsensical. Hopkins dared to be great? Ha! Really? Hopkins didn’t get to the LHW division until Roy had been there for 10 years! Hopkins wouldn’t fight the best SMW’s or LHW’s whilst he was in his prime, as he was too busy beating up on naturally smaller fighters in a weak division. He wouldn’t rematch Roy in 2002, at a 168 C-W, for a payday that almost trebled what he’d got for fighting Tito. He walked from that fight and called out the JMW champs instead. He only finally moved up after he’d lost twice to Taylor. What did Tarver do that Roy didn’t? Roy fought Calzaghe, Hopkins and Lebedev when he was a shell of his former self. Roy wasn’t reluctant. It’s a myth that’s been debunked numerous times. Dariusz wouldn’t relinquish his WBO belt and he wouldn’t leave Germany. Liles, Eubank, Hopkins and Calzaghe wouldn’t fight him when he was anywhere near his best. You say that Roy didn’t take risks or take big fights. Yet after beating a top 10 HW, he dropped back to LHW where Tarver gave him the hardest fight of his career at the time. What did Roy do afterwards? He rematched him straight away. He then got knocked out. What did he do afterwards? He fought Johnson and then Tarver again for the 3rd time. You can’t have it both ways. You can’t ridicule him for getting knocked out and then at the same time say that he didn’t take risks or big fights. That’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read. Either give me something to debate or move along.
Because when Hopkins moved up he fought THE champion of the division. He didn’t handpick a John Ruiz level belt holder. Like when Spinks moved up to Heavyweight he fought THE champion he didn’t try and handpick one of the trinket belt holders. See the difference there? It matters. Glass Jaw Roy also never beat a lineal, unified, or undisputed champion in his whole career. Not a single one. He was too busy looking for the easiest way out not the toughest fight. Roy was a total manufactured fraud. Jones wasn’t serious about the biggest fights he wanted the easiest fight with the least risk. It’s why HBO his own tv network dubbed him ‘reluctant’ Roy because he wouldn’t fight anyone instead preying on civil servants and obscure mandatories. We know why. Deep down you know why. Roy’s own daddy knew why. He had no Chin. None.
You’re hopeless. I’ve already told you that Bernard played it safe until he was 40. You know that he did. Again, when Bernard beat Tarver which was a great win, Roy had already been at LHW for 10 years at that point, and he’d already fought Tarver 3 times, the first of which had come almost 3 years earlier. How can you praise Bernard but criticise Roy? Why don’t you think about what you’re saying. Roy went up to LHW at 27 after beating Toney. He didn’t beat naturally smaller guys like Bernard did. Again, Bernard was calling out JMW champs instead of fighting SMW’s and LHW’s. Regarding Spinks, I give him huge credit for fighting Mike. Huge credit. But Roy was a former MW. The whole ‘Roycott’ thing came in 2001 when fans were rightly frustrated that fights against the likes of Dariusz weren’t happening. But they didn’t know what was happening behind the scenes. But nobody complained when Roy went on to fight Ruiz and Tarver. And most fans knew that Hopkins didn’t want the rematch in 2002. If you want to quote HBO, you can note how they tried to make the fights against Liles, Dariusz and Hopkins. Every article from the time gives specific details of how Roy tried to fight those guys. You’ve seen them before. But you only want to be selective of what they said. Let’s finish with his chin. Again, you want it both ways. You want to ridicule his chin, yet you won’t give him credit for fighting at LHW which was his 3rd weight class. You want to ridicule his chin, yet you won’t give him credit for fighting a HW. You won’t even give him credit for rematching the guy who knocked him out. I’ve been here for 8 years now, yet I’ve still not seen you offer anybody an actual debate on this subject. And that’s because you are simply completely incapable of doing so.
