You saying Ali would never have won the heavyweight title? No, of course not. Just not sure what you're trying to say here. Ali was a much bigger man than Jones.

As for Robinson. First of all, he was a natural welterweight. He didn't become middleweight champion until after over 120 fights and 10 years into his career. Plus, when he won the welterweight title, Joe Louis was heavyweight champ. When he won the middleweight title, Jersey Joe Walcott was heavyweight champ, and shortly thereafter, Rocky Marciano was heavyweight champ.

Not exactly John Ruiz heavyweight champs at the time.

Your post is the epitome of apples and organges.

And I've said this before. Any number of guys between 160 and heavyweight at that time could've moved up and boxed the socks off of John Ruiz. That was more of a parlor trick than a real accomplishment.

I see your point, I am not gonna say Jones is naturally bigger or smaller than Hopkins, I do think naturally Roy had a smaller frame.

And when Roy went to Heavy, it was not like he just bloated himself up with extra fat, had he done that, losing the extra fat to get down to LHW would not have been as big of a deal, but then again he would have been slower than he was at Heavy and not as strong.

Roy hired one of the best physical trainers in the world to get to Heavyweight, and pretty much stacked dense muscle on like a brick **** house. There was no fat to lose, and losing the weight to get back down would have taken much longer to do it safely without damaging the fast twitch muscle reflexes.

It was a great feat to drop that quick and win the LHW championship back, something only HOF fighters have done in the past, but Tarver lured him into that by pissing him off, and he reacted with anger and didn't think it out enough.

Can we please quit with the "losing 25 pounds of muscle" talk? Seriously?

    It never happened.

true enough but the suggestion is that robinson couldn't say, win the middleweight title from lamotta and then go BACK down to welterweight or even lightweight and beat gavilan or sammy angott.

for ali, he would have to lose 25 pounds and beat bob foster at light heavy for the equivalent

it's embellished a bit but you have to admit he was a solid 200 pounds. it wasn't all fat or extra weight, he had a lot of muscle to lose

Yeah, it was not 25... Though it was about 10-15...

I was a wrestler and when trimming down I had to do it slowly to make sure I was losing body fat instead of muscle, then dehydrate at the end before the weight in. Losing even 5 pounds of muscle makes you feel sluggish and slow, you can certainly tell the difference, I can only imagine 15.

For someone the age Jones was already starting to slowly decline, it can certainly damage the fast twitch muscle reflexes, and for someone that relied on reflexes that much, you can see how that would be a huge deal.

I would say it was 10-15 solid muscle, 5 lbs fat, and 5-10lbs water give or take. I was a wrestler, losing even a pound of muscle you would not feel your best, for I had a really low body fat % as well as Jones did and I was 18, not 34.

It used to **** me off because people with higher body fat could shed weight way easier than I could.

great post and thanks for the input:good

not nearly the same but i went from 187 to 157 when i started working out and gained MORE energy and strength because it was all fat. i've never been lean enough to worry about taking away muscle but i can say losing fat doesn't weaken you from a personal standpoint
