Roy could have beaten both? In all honesty, I don't think Collins would have been too difficult for Roy. Having Steve Collins on his record would be another good win for people to point out Fair enough, you say Roy wouldn't have gotten credit for beating Benn. But he gets credit for beating R.Johnson who had 5 losses already, Malinga who had 8 losses already (inc. losses to Eubank and Benn), Sosa as well. If Roy beat Benn, and especially Benn had then gone on to beat Mclellan, I think Roy would get immense credit for it. I'm not sure, in my opinion, when two fighters both want a fight, regardless of promoters, it usually gets made (e.g. Lewis-Tyson, didn't just have rival promoters, they had rival networks!) All of that is fair enough. Joe could have achieved more no doubt. You made the comparison between Joe and Ricky Hatton, and it's a good comparison. Though if the likes of Ottke and Hopkins had accepted offers, Joe could have fought them both. I agree with you on the notion that wins over the likes Glen Johnson and Clinton Woods would have been better than fighters Joe did beat. One thing I never understood, was when people accuse Joe of ducking Froch. Carl was calling Joe out, at the time Joe was making the Kessler fight. At that time, Froch was British champion, and had never fought at world level. Joe made a huge unification showdown with Kessler. Then Froch kept on calling out Joe when he was at LHW and retired. I agree with you, and enjoyed reading your response. Roy's resume is better than Benn's, Collins', Joe's and DM's. At the same time, none of those fighters have been described as the 'greatest ever', which is the title of this thread, do you see what I mean?
I sure wish Roy could of got fights made with the likes of Benn, Collins, Eubank, DM ect... It seems Roy gets most of the blame for not making the fights, but there a lot of those guys didn't show too much an interest in fighting Roy either. Tarver proved to us, if you really try to get Roy in the ring, you certainly can...
Great reply mate. Like I said the other week, I would have given Roy credit if he'd have beaten Benn. I'm talking about the "All he ever did was fight sanitation workers" brigade. Good point about Lewis and Tyson, but that fight was for millions and millions of dollars, and everybody wanted a piece of it. After Benn beat the G Man, his career came to an end. He lost to Malinga and Collins. After Gerald, the fight was no longer relevant. Looking back now, it would have been great if he'd have fought Roy just before he fought Gerald. But why did Don want a three fight deal? Why didn't he just put a rematch clause in, or go for a two fight deal? He didn't have to act the way he did. I don't blame Joe for not fighting Carl, but I think it was a joke that he cashed out on Roy like he did, especially after he'd backtracked on comments made in his own book in 2006. A fight with Froch in 2008, would have been a better fight. Obviously Carl wasn't a huge name then, and he wouldn't have gotten as much, but I think more people would have been interested. Joe must know, that even ardent fans of his, don't give him much credit for that win. The title of this thread, has to be based on just ability. Regards, Loudon.
I remember hearing or reading a while back that neither Benn or Jones really wanted to fight each other after the G-Man incident... I am not sure if it was true.
Why is roid still being discussed? His most recent performances are a better indicator of his true abiltiy.
So Muhammad Ali is a bum because of his performance in his last 2 fights against Larry Holmes and Trevor Berbick?
Jones offense was one of the greatest.... his defense was just his reflexes and his chin was below avg.
^ ALL OF THIS To summarize Roy Jones by Ricky Fraizer just shows how much the guys know about the actual fighters Jones faced ! This is wihy these arguments get repetitive ..They keep sticking to one or two points but don't have any valid argumenets !
Correct! I bet the majority of the "He only fought bums" brigade, have never seen all of the fights that i've listed. Half of them know less than nothing about boxing. They can't have been anywhere near a boxing gym in their whole life, to start calling everybody bums. They're a bunch of jokers. By the way, I've been a member on here for about 4 months now, and I've read loads of your posts. I happen to agree with just about everything I've seen you write. You're a great poster who knows a hell of a lot about boxing. Regards, Loudon.
