I think he's rather saying that Robinson was accustomed to fighting big, strong middleweights. LaMotta was atleast Jorge Castro's size if not bigger, and Castro was evidently stronger than the middleweight version of Roy Jones. It's not the physical aspect that would trouble Robinson against Jones, he's met 160+ pound, 5'10 men before, but the sheer talent and athleticism of him.

Guys like Fullmer and LaMotta did come in at around 168 pounds to their middleweight fights. Keep in mind that Robinson was able to handle LaMotta even when he was a welterweight (though not without trouble), so he was used to fighting stronger guys.

Also bringing the Maxim fight is not the best evidence for Jones beating Robinson because Jones would probably never beat Robinson the way Maxim did, by outlasting him in the heat. An ideal fantasy match-up would never even take place under such conditions. Other than the ending, Robinson showed he could easily outspeed and outbox the bigger man who was noted for his boxing ability.
He even outjabbed Maxim.
