It was meaningless. But Jones was already finished. If he loses so what just another lost to add to the resume. If Hopkins lose. He's as finished as Roy was. As it was the win didnt add anything to Hopkins Legacy. But he still remained a meaningful fighter till this year.
The fact that Hopkins would take the fight when it meant nothing, for peanuts, says more about Hopkins than anything else.
There's a reason Roy avoided these big fights for as long as he could. When he stepped up he started losing.
Roy Jones was an excellent boxer in his prime, a boxer that I believe would of beaten everybody at his lower weight, but there are certain fights that Roy could of tried harder to get. Even Collins went for a Roy jones fight back in the mid 90's, he even turned up to Roy's house demanding for a fight, but not even that fight happened. Now roy has no choice but to ask for the big fights because he's no longer the top dog and hasn't been for a while.
Not true. It was Hopkins who killed that fight by demanding too much money. Both HBo and Thomas Hauser point the finger at Hopkins for that fight falling through. Hopkins back then was calling out Vargas and Mosley
Alot of people were worried about Jones's long term health going into that fight and Im sure people pleaded with Hopkins to pull out of it, which of course is something he refused to do.
Collins. He lost every time he stepped up. He didn't deserve to be at Roy's house let alone in the same ring with his highness.
The fight with Jones should of took place around 2000-2001 at least a year before Oscar came onto the radar
And the faking of injuries. It was pathetic. Hopkins would have had to fake a heart attack in 2001 against Jones and hope for a DQ Wouldn't have put it past him
