Sad. Looks like he mismanaged his money to continue on like this. I thought the Tyson exhibition would of set him up for life

    Absolutely.

Anybody who doesn't feel nostalgia, for the pre World War II era of the sport, doesn't have a heart.

Anybody who wants that kind of boxing back, doesn't have a brain a brain!

He needs saving from himself. They see Mayweather supposedly making $multi mil $ out of his circus acts & think they can do it. I firmly believe Floyd needs the $$$$$$ as well as trying to relive the glory as such . He hates to see any other fighter getting credit Just very jealous man, craves the limelight

Agree and I particularly fear for Jones as he’s taken way too many beatings as it is.

That’s a given. I don’t know if he’s bankrupt or not but it’s mind boggling if he is. Not only did he make a fortune boxing but he was also an HBO commentator for well over a decade. It’s sickening to hear about how much money these guys go through

Like someone said to Mike Tyson " "You've earned over 30 Mil$$$$$ how on earth can you be bankrupt"? Mike said " Easy I spent $34 mil "

Really is unbelievable. To think that most of us average joes work our whole lives for Pennys and manage to retire with more money than some of these guys do is crazy

There’s a difference between having money and having income.

When you have money and you spend it, it’s gone.

When you have income, it replenishes.

I have no idea what Roy’s financial situation is — I think part of it has been he knows nothing else and just likes to fight — but most of these guys who make that huge money spend it as fast as they make it because they want to live that rock star/celebrity lifestyle.

So they keep trying to live like that and with no income, the money dries up. I mean, Roy had his own recording studio in his house and I think invested in a lot of acts trying to be a music entrepreneur and of course that didn’t work out. No telling what kinds of other things he wasted money on.

People who become boxers don’t have the background to know how to handle money and they tend to listen to the wrong people. Tyson had an annuity set up by Jacobs and Cayton that was going to pay him $1M per year for life when he turned like 45 or 50 iirc … and as soon as he left them and huddled up with King he cashed it in and spent it. Probably doesn’t even remember what he spent it on.

I don't know about Roy's financial situation or what kind of issues he might be having, but I do know Foreman did it right when he came up with the grill. That set him up with so much money that he never needed to step into the ring for financial reasons. Most other boxers would be wise to follow his path and have something else going on that's not about boxing, but isn't hard to do and can generate reoccurring income off the brand he already built up rather than just fight for lump sums that have a lot of health risks attached.

I don’t even know what to say to this.

If it was that easy, everyone would have $100M-plus grill deal. Just line yourself up a deal that makes you wealthy and sit back and count the money.

How many things have former athletes (and coaches and bankers and lawyers, etc.) invested in that went completely bust and they lost everything? George’s story is so far beyond 1-in-a-million that you’d have a better chance buying a lottery ticket.

Hulk Hogan was offered the grill deal and a juicer as an endorsement deal. He chose the juicer so George got the grill offer. He took that, got paid handsomely for it, and with that money AND a chunk of his boxing earnings bought the grill … and then sold that years later for nine figures. You can’t duplicate that set of circumstances and have it come up roses for you. It’s great fortune mixed with blind chance.

But don’t forget, the ONLY reason they came to George to pay him to endorse it (after Hogan turned it down) was BECAUSE he came back to the ring as an old man and was winning fights and gained celebrity. He lost a lot of weight training for boxing and the pitch for the grill was it drained off a lot of the fat from cooking meat so you got leaner meat and, hey, you can lose a lot of weight too.

So if Georgie had NOT come back to fight at an advanced age AND had success doing so, becoming a well-liked, friendly-face celebrity in the process (as opposed to being a long-retired guy known for scowling and being surly), he never could have lucked into the grill deal in the first place.
