IF Roy Jones had retired, or maybe made a defence of his title after the Ruiz fight, then retired. How kindly would history have looked upon him?

After a few years people would have seen the Ruiz win and handpicking the easiest heavyweight champ he could beat. He never looked for the great challenges, that will hurt his legacy. His skills were great, but he didn't fight everyone. Sort of like the Dominique Wilkins of boxing. A guy who was more show then anything else.

All I know, is that he wouldn't have been featured in the series of films made by the Chin-Checkers.

I still rate him as one of the best to have ever laced them up

    This

Roy is my boy and does it ****ing matter that his game was based on reflexes and athleticism?

Still a ****ing hard ass beast mother ****er in his day and if he had retired after Ruiz or even Tarver 1 he would have deffo been viewed more favourably.

Trouble is his inability to look good against Tarver the first time forced him into the ring again. Roys a fighter though and if it wasn't Tarver it would have been someone else.

In my opinion Tarver I was Roy's best performance.

Completely weight drained and he still beat a prime Tarver. It was a close fight but i thought it was clearly won by Jones (kind of like Cotto beating Mosley - close but clear)

I still rate him highly, he's just shot and has been for a few years. No one should get credit for beating Jones jnr now.

I would have rated him higher... Shouldn't do that I know, but I actually believed him to dominate the LHW division a couple years after.
Most people saw the Ruiz bout for what it was, even back then... Taking on the relatively easy WBA "champ" to paste his legacy.

I rate him high anyway, prime RJJ was something else...

It wouldn't change my own ranking of him at all. Losing when shot can never change your peak performances or career achievements. Ali's fights with Holmes and Berbick don't diminish his standing in my eyes, nor do SRL's failures against Norris and Camacho. Not at all.

I agree he won a clear close decision however Roy liked looking good and this win against Tarver bothered him for sure.

He was never the same after taking off all that weight.

Tyson would have been a better shout! If he could have fought Tyson and won THEN retired what would we be saying about the guy now?

Tarver has a ****ing big mouth!

Titles from MW to HW is impressive (even aginst Ruiz) and Roy does have a couple of other decent wins. Too many stiffs and not enough stars when prime will always hurt his legacy though.

Win, lose or draw fighting on is not always bad for old, past prime fighters. Think of Duran, Chavez or BHop. However for Roy its the brutal KO losses to lesser fighters that make him look bad.

It would be great if he could grab another title against a worthy champ and then retire for good, however he's too shot and the next KO could be quite nasty. Give it up Jones!
