He is on the list of most gifted boxers. Legacy...not that amazing.
How many could move in the ring like he did?

Very favourably, so what happened is kind of fitting IMO, cause when you consider that he did not always fight the best available, if he had of retired then, we would of been left with a false perception of his abilities. Now im not saying what happened against Tarver would of happened 4 years earlier, I dont know, maybe it does, maybe it doesn't, but at least those Johnson, Tarver fights leave enough of a question to keep a degree of realism regarding Roy's overall ability, cause some thought he was the GOAT.

Its as I always say, some fighters are greater because of what they dont do, rather than what they do. Joe Calzaghe being a great example.

I agree with this. Floyd is going the same route. A guy with more tools than anyone else, but doesn't look for the "great challenges".

Jones dominates and destroys Tarver at any point between 1996 and 2002. :deal

(the Jones of 1996-2002 vs the Tarver of the mid 2000s I mean)

His legacy is as tarnished as any legen who fought long after their best ..Why is it that Roy's legacy gets so trashed for doing the exact same thing like fighters such as Ali,Tyson ,Leonard,Hearns Duran etc etc all of which who fought long past their best .Do people remember that Macho Comacho KO ed Leonard yet I don't hear about Rays legacy being as bad as Jones ..Hell Mike Tyson was beat by journeyman Kevin Mcride ..

And by the same token Lennox Lewis is critisized for not carrying on after he was clearly shot and had just managed to win a very close fight.

roy would have been remembered for a number of things

1 - failing a drugs test for banned anabolic steroids. he was a cheat. the thing is with proven cheats, they very rarely cheat just once, they are usually multiple cheats who just find cuter ways to hide their cheating. a person cheats because they are not confident about fighting without having unlawful advantages. its like saying margarito only loaded his gloves once when in reality he has probably loaded those gloves on numerous occasions but only been caught just the once :-(

2 - he would have been remembered as a fighter with a great skill set who could fully demonstrate these skills when juiced up against sanitation workers and civil servants :yep

3 - he would have been remembered as a serial ducker who avoided real challenges because he was making easy money from hbo for clowning sanitation workers. there is always gonna be questions why he never fought nunn, mccllelan, benn, eubank, collins, prime calzaghe, prime hopkins etc :deal

4 - he would always be remembered for moving out of a good super-mid division to fight in an extremely weak light heavyweight division where hbo paid him money to clown bums like clinton woods whilst he completely ducked fighting the real man at light heavy DM :dead

5 - he would have always been remembered for never beating a lineal or unified champion :deal

the positive aspect of jones retiring at the time you highlighted would be that his fraudulent glass jaw wouldn't have been exposed and wouldn't be continously ridiculed  after being blasted out by b-level plodders like tarver and johnson.

jones would also never have being lacy'ied at the hands of joe calzaghe where the brittle handed welsh man destroyed him not through power but through the use of a superior skill set :deal

jones would also not have been exposed as

    - not being able to adapt and having no plan B :deal
    - not being able to fight in adversity :deal
    - having no heart and collapsing like a lawn chair when the going got tough :deal

You could have only written this bold part because it's cystal clear why you wrote the rest...

Bringing down someone else to make one feel better about themselves...a clear sign of hidden insecurity.

Calzaghe was very good but no where near as good as RJJ. Calzaghe has a weaker resume than Roy.

Just accept it and carry on. ;)

Excellent post. Could not have said it better myself. Jones was a Glass Jawed Fraud and a convicted drug cheat who refused to make the big fights happen because his Chin was complete glass.

WOW, just wow. It takes alot to blow me away, but this post has just done that.
If ever a summary of a career, celebrating the pros and cons has ever been more accurate, I would be shocked.
Remove the delusions and rose tinted glasses and what you have here is a pure scientific analysis of the career of R Jones.

The only thing that hurts me about this post, is how much it has put many of my efforts to shame with its greatness
