He didn't even win a title at 154.

That would be Terry Norris at the time. Jones and vaca fought Jan, 1992. End of 91, Ring had Norris. Vaca wasn't even listed.

Could you imagine if Roy Jones won a title at 154, and still went on to win a title at HW? Where would you rank him P4P all time if he did that?

Vaca was a former champion & top ranked contender (think Kell Brook today).

I see what you're saying, but Vaca had been beaten a few timers, and KO'd prior to the Jones jr. fight. Was a good step up, that's for sure. And he won in a highly impressive fashion, and to me, that does matter.

2 years prior Terry Norrris beat Vaca via Split Decision, maybe RJ Sr. felt Norris was more harmful than anybody at 160. Punchers have that psychological edge, especially on a father.

At the time, I would think fighting Terry Norris at 154 would be too great a jump for Roy, even as talented as he was. Could be right.

Terry Norris was intimidating as a puncher, but if Roy Jones was prepared mentally he should have been able to beat Norris, maybe stay in 154 for a few more fights to gain more confidence.

Vaca himself was coming of a good TKO win vs Mark Breland one fight before Roy Jones Jr.

Possible. Good points. Norris was very fast himself, and could put you away with either hands. RJJ was something special, so cannot rule that out. But if I had to pick, it would be Norris. He was more experienced, powerful, fast, and a very good boxer. He liked to try and mix up unfortunately, good ol machismo, that was one of his faults IMO.

Vaca himself took Norris to a SD but styles make fights & Norris was stylistically dangerous vs RJ. A very careful prime Roy Jones should be able to beat Norris, at 160 Julian Jackson & G Man were also hard punchers that didn't face Roy Jones, so IMO Roy Jones was better off in 154 (vs Terry Norris) than in 160 (vs G Man & Julian Jackson)

When fighters move up in weight, they tend to pick their spots. At 154 Roy Jones had the chance to face everyone & do well. If he can beat Terry Norris he would have had a decade long of domination (Julian Jackson moved to 160 in 1990)

Nigel Benn was a savage puncher but was shot to bits by the time he fought Roy.
To be sure I thought Roy Jones was amazing but he does seem to get a pass for just about anything.

He may get a pass on a lot of things, but from I've seen., especially on this board, it's often because any fight not getting made is often said to be his fault.

    Got some "For example..."?
