I think Hearns chin actually improved as he gained weight,, it was never solid but I think he was vulnerable at welterweight, Leonard chased him for half the fight at 147 because Tommy knew Ray could hurt him. Had Pipino been able to land his hook on Tommy he'd have fell like a can of pick up sticks. Strangely at 175 against Barkley Hearns was dropped but got up and absorbed a lot of punishment and finished the fight. Roy could never have engaged in that kind of toe to toe. Roy's chin was about a 6 , Hearns was 6 at welter and 6.5 at higher weights

Toney and Hopkins both hit Jones at some point in their bouts and Jones didnt fall over.

Yeah but everyone Hearns fought who was a name hit him and he stood up.. I don't think his chin was as bad as people say or he would not have been in the great fights. You need to hang in there to be in great fights.

What I mean is Hearns whole career from the start was a bit of can he get you before you get him, if you talk about great fights. He really was not stopped too much considering how many guys he fought and how he fought them. Later his chin got more suspect, but he learned how to stay away from the bigger punches. So he could hang in there. Jones never showed a wanting to hang in there and take punches, which tells me his resistance was not like Hearns, who would go in there and risk getting hit and hurt. I don't think if Jones was hit by a Leonard like Hearns was in 1981 he would last too long. I don't think he would brawl with Hagler or Roldan. Hearns greatness depends a little on taking punches after being hurt and still fighting a great fight. Jones career was never based on that. So I have to say Hearns chin was better. When Jones started to get hit he was knocked out hard with Tarver, and Johnson and Enzo Mac, and that cruiserweight whose name I forget..

When Jones got knocked out he was past his prime fighting at a heavier weight.

If you ever boxed you know that punch resistance just goes. One day your chin is good then all th sudden it isnt.

He was never hit clean but he sure folded when hit. I always thought what is he afraid of just to engage a little. Hearns always engaged. It is a case where a guy who is known to have been hit yet took the punches yet not great overall at times, is being compared to a guy who was never hit, yet when he finally was he crashed.

not much. Hearns was more kamakaze as Ray Leonard said, and he still had a great career. I don't think you can compare their chins. Hearns took more punches all through his career even against Andries he was hit in round and 2 with a punch which could have knocked out many guys.

Review Tarver/Jones 1. Roy took some heavy shots and gutted it out.

one guy had wars and the other was elusive. Tommy's whole approach was to land and set up his punches and sometimes get reckless. Jones was safety first like Mayweather.

Jones was knocked out clean more times but Hearns seemed to get hurt more often.

You do know Hearns was a master boxer right?
Nobody ever beat him by outboxing him.

Jones had a great chin. He never got KO'd or hurt in his prime. What happened after really doesn't matter at all. If Hagler fought in to his 40's, he's getting KO'd.

Hearns' chin was poorer than Jones'. His chin was still better than average.

It's a myth that these two had glass or even below average chins.
