Jones never ducked anybody....DM never wanted to leave Germany so you cant blame Jones for that....and most of us know Hopkins turned away a 60/40 split well after Jones already beat him....the one fighter Jones shouldve ducked is Tarver....
Critics will always be hard against unbelievable natural talents like Jones ! No one ever mentions that B-Hop fought against Hassine Cherifi after Tito Trinidad !!!! Hassine WHO ? EXACTLY !!!! But it seems Bernard is blessed with fan protection compared to RJJ.....
At the end of the day he has prime Tony, Bernard, and a HW title... If he had none of those then you could start of question...
In my opinion, he should never have given him a rematch. I think jones should have probably retired after ruiz...In my opinion, Tarver is the same as a giant piece of dog **** in the boxing biz. He reminds me of a modern day Robert Ford. He thought that everyone would praise him for his victory of Jones...In reality hes thought of as a cherry picker who got a weight drained Jones who was out of his prime......and he still lost the first match to a weight drained jones:deal Fact is, if Tarver wanted Jones bad enough in his prime, he could have had him...There was a time when people didnt want to fight jones due to pure fear.
I remember that Jones allowed HBO to pick his opponent about 10 years back and none of the other big names at light heavy wanted to fight Roy.
Jones has ducked nobody.... There are fights he never went out of his way to make happen, but I guess he felt like he didn't have to. I can understand not wanting to leave the country, more so since Roy was subject to one of the biggest robberies of all time, especially when he went to LHW and started getting into the pot-shot style. I do think Roy gets accused too much of ducking especially when those fighters not were going out of their way to call out Roy Jones when he is known as the best fighter on the planet. I think plenty of people did not want to fight him in his prime as well..... I think the most anybody has ever called Roy out was when Tarver had a close fight with him in their first fight, then everyone wanted to fight him.
Roy didn´t want to leave the US to fight CM. And we all know Jones refused a 50/50 split Damned, works both ways!
Yep, additionally there were Calzaghe and Ottke at smw, Maske and Rocchigiani at lhw, Jirov at cw - yeah Roy never fought there but he got up to hw, so that´s not an argument - and he could have made a solid hw resume by beating some top10 contenders and avoiding Lewis or the Klitschkos, additionally rematches with Hopkins and Toney should have been made. If Jones would have had the desire to be one of the greatest he would at least made half of those fights happen but he didn´t. Jones was supposed to be a top10 atg but he chose the dark side - money - instead.
He never ever beat a prime Hopkins. Hopkins prime was from '97 to '02. Jones fought him in '93. That´s hardly prime. He beat a Toney who was badly weightdrained, good win but it looks better on paper than it really was. He beat Ruiz, yeah, but that does not mean much since he didn´t prove he was up there with the best hws, he should have fought 3-4 contenders there.
i'm not a fan of rjj, i've even criticized him on this forum. but why would he need to rematch toney? and i'm a toney fan. he shut him out for godsake. somehow he's suppose to seek a rematch a guy he utterly dominated? imo toney got his career back on track after the jirov fight, when jones went up to fight ruiz, and did nothing before that to warrant a rematch.
Hopkins too green, Toney weight drained, blah blah blah. Loewe gets the prize for the ESB idiot of the day.
IMO Roy didn't duck DM, he just didn't want to fight him in Germany - which is understandable. If DM had traveled to the US I think the fight would've happened. But DM didn't want to fight in the US, so you can either say they both 'ducked' each other or they both just weren't that interested in the fight. Which is a pity. In the end, DM was a very, very good fighter in his prime and would have looked good on Roys record (not that I have it a 100% given that Roy would have beaten him). But Roy was definitely the bigger star and had the belts, while DM only had the WBO strap - Roy was considered the champ. DM was the contender and should have travelled to the US to try and take them belts.
Well, because Toney was weightdrained. He could have shut up his critics by beat Toney at hw or cw. And he would, I´m pretty sure of that but he didn´t.
