Something was goin on in the late 90's... ESPN had some sort of a debate, Roy was on and there were a few reporters... the reporters just took turns questioning Roy on why he was cherry-picking opponents. I recall it being a big thing at the time.
Then Roy came out with that video "Ya'll Musta Forgot" rapping about the good opponents he had defeated, defending himself from the critics ripping him.

Bottom line: people believing that Roy ducked opponents was no myth, but I suppose it's something we'd have to do more homework on to learn more about and get exact details.

Agree with Mr h. Some of the fighters he did not fight were heavy handed! Benn, Gerald M,etc. Hopkinks and Toney were not. Why risk going overseas to get possibly knocked out?! Where r the glory handswhen fighters fought eveyone in there weight class. But with Jones its all about the $ which is fine. But it still left unanswered ?"s.

Toney not heavy handed? Toney had very good punching power at SMW. He may not be a big puncher at HW, but he knocked out or down fighters with single punches from MW up to CW. Ask Michael Nunn about it, a man with a good chin. Or Tim Littles, Charles Williams, Saul Montana & Jason Robinson, all brutal KOs.

Give Roy a break. He may have been cherry picking a bit, but he still has a lot of good names on his record. And it's not even over yet, he's challenging one of the best right now in his very next fight. One example: he challenged James Toney when Toney was on top of his game, and moved up a weightclass to do so. Toney was considered the best P4P fighter in the world at that time and was a huge favourite. Toney was on a roll, he was undefeated with 44 wins and considered unbeatable. Toney brutally knocked out Charles Williams a couple months before. Roy took a big risk fighting him, and it wasn't his fault that Toney showed up weight-drained as **** and put up a disappointing performance that night. Roy showed balls on taking that fight alone.

Toney was more of a boxer then a puncher especially compared t oguys like Benn and Gerald m. He definitely lost power @ hwy, tho. hope he doesn't fight Haye. He could get hurt.

I disagree with Jones not being the man to beat. The "Bible of Boxing's" pound for pound best in the world is always the man to beat.:yep

Jones was everyones p4p king. And was the man from the time that he beat Toney to the time that he lost to Tarver 10 years as boxings best that was a long run. Its just their way of blaming Jones for not fighting DM when the REAL facts point to DM not wanting to fight Jones. Im not saying that Jones was knocking down the door to fight DM but he would have fought him, that is the difference.:hey

I agree, there were fighters that Jones did not go out of his way to fight, but I truly do believe he would have fought anybody that really tried to get his attention. He dropped back down from LHW to fight Tarver when Tarver started making all that noise, knowing it was gonna be a tough fight and a high risk one for Roy at that.

The thing is when Roy was in his prime, there were many people that really wanted no part of him. I think he get critizied too much for not making certain fights happen, when the facts are it should be the other guys wanting to fight him to prove their legacy, and show they belong with the greats.

Michalczewski and Jones are the top 2 Lightheavyweights of the past 20 years.

That the fight never happened was a real tragedy.

DM called Roy out many times, the only time I remember Roy mentioning DM's name was in 2002, when DM looked old and past it against Richard Hall.

I am hearing a lot of "Dm didn't want to leave Germany", but I remember DM stating on record that he would fight Jones anywhere. He simply never received a decent offer.

Let's see one link from an unbiased source stating that DM turned down an offer to fight Roy Jones.

    yes i do...

thats a blinkered european view (and youø're probably british from what you've said) from someone who doesn't understand how business works in boxing.

make your name in the US or else you dont have any weight to bring to the negotiating table.

read my posts and then tell me why i'm wrong instead of posting this tripe and then not being able to back it up.

if ANYBODY here thinks jones dodged these guys then i'm up for it.

it's only brits who have been 'mothered' by their local boxing sites and 'beercan fans' who still believe this tripe - but i'm willing to mix it with anyone who thinks i'm wrong.

by the way...i'm not american - and i don't want to hear any 'whiney judgements' because you don't know what to say to me.

just tell me why you disagree and i'll take it from there.

Yeah, but were Benn, Eubank, and Darius willing to come here to the US or did they expect Superman to go over the Atlantic? Because if they expected Superman to go over there, you are smoking crack and lack common sense. He was the top dog. If you want him, you have to come to his place.

As for McClellan, did he really "duck" him or was it just circumstances that never made it happen. McClellan suffered his injury in 1995 and RJJ was JUST blossoming after his win over Toney. If anyone has more info on this situation, feel free to chime in.

    Its called "RING"

It wasnt even an offer from Jones' camp that Im talking about, it was HBO wanting to know what it would take to make the fight. I dont remember what issue it was, and I dont have time to look for it, but I do know that on the Front there was a picture of Jones and the captions read "Roy, move up or shut up" In that article they asked Dibella what options were there out there for Jones and which were they interested in. He said that they wanted Jones vs DM then he talked about what I posted before.;)

He just pulled those names out of his a$$. First off Jones and G-man were best friends in boxing and would have likely never fought anyways...Kinda like Chico and Mosley saying they would never fight.
