hmmm, but owing back taxes doesnt make you broke. Just means you didnt pay taxes at the time.

Mayweather owed the IRS major cash at one point too, but I dont think anyone claimed that Floyd was broke.

The fact that he is still fighting should tell you that he has money problems.

There was an article up a while back about his rap label and his real estate deals. Highlighting the amount of money he has lost.

    Are you kidding ?

Jones never got with a top promotor at the start and this cost him heaps of cash !

Bear in mind that Jones Hops 1 was fought on a Bowe undercard, Roy was to be come the best P4P in the world after that and this was an era where HWs were making over 30 million for title fights

Lack of an experienced promotor hurt him badly as did his match making, he mad a fraction of Delahoya or others got , rarely on hbo ppv etc etc He realised a little later that you need a big player to get cash so he workled with Mohammad and King

Now dont get me wrong he's a multi millionaire and all, just saying

Also maybe a family man but has spent money on over 80 acres of land and has thousands of chickens and dogs to maintain and also a huge place with all those extra bills of maintenance as well.

    Plus a failed rap career

    Maybe he just likes fighting?

Its not like hes constantly hustling for fights either.
    In a little over 7 years,hes fought 10 fights.

Maybe he has money problems, but I would assume at this stage hes making more money from HBO than fighting the likes of Max Alexander and that Polish guy.

    Yes and no.
He got a HBO contract after the Toney fight, which meant they paid 3m for his fights. By being his own promoter Jones basically kept the bulk of that money.

His record is something like 7-7 in his last 14 fights.
Humiliating one sided loss to Calzaghe. Bad ko losses to Lebedev, Green, Tarver and Johnson.
As a fighter he is finished

He is making money with his current hbo gig but lord knows how much money he still owes. Has he even paid those taxes?

Having an 80 acre farm isnt exactly a bad investment. Its hardly on the scale of having 6 different ferraris in your driveway and having a pet tiger.

While he may have suffered a little from not having a bog promoter, he also didnt have to fork out 10% or more to promoters.

    Fights against Hopkins(x2)
    Calzaghe
    Toney
    3 Tarver fights
    Ruiz

etc etc, were all good money fights.

Back in the day he used to donate most of his gates to charity, which would imply he was maiking pretty big money from his TV deals.

He rap career, was medicore at best. i hardly see how that would make him poor though.

    Lucrative endorsements.

He also had television appearances, appearing in some movies like the Matrix and Devils Advocat.

Solid gig with HBO, which is a steady pay cheque.

I really dont see how the guy could go broke, unless he lost TONNES of money on investments.

Sure he didnt have to pay a promotor a percentage- that a top promotor would get him back ten fold.

Yet he had to pay all the promotor expenses himself ! A good promotor is used to dealing with TV execs and have decades of contract negotiation and experience- you cant just jump into somethign like that, Jones couldve earned double what he made in his prime !!

He did have Stanley Levin and others to advise him.

He also tended to fight no name fighters who basically had no leverage in the negotiations.

Hopefully he doesn't join boxing's recent tragedies. He may be skilled at getting KTFO but sometimes things happen with punches to the head that go beyond humiliation and legacy degradation.

Three more fights and HBO replaces his stuttering ass.
