Roy in his prime rarely even lost a round out of all of his fights .... on top of that he made his opposition look amateur... top 5 all time? I don't know about that.... if you were going to make a ATG list based mostly off of ability and H2H matchups then YES... but his achievements are lacking.
I feel there's a question mark concerning Roy's punch resistence. This being the case, no, he's not an all time top 5 fighter. He's also lacking in the resume department, as people have pointed out. What I would say is that in terms of his ATG ranking, he benifits more than anyone on my list from appearance of skillset on film. He does look amazing. I have him just outside the 20.
Jones always gives a lot of emotion for fans. Very effectic style, hard punch and very fast hands make him one of the best boxers in history. I wanted his fight against Michalczewski. I'm very sad that this fight never happened.
i know zoo schooled vernon forrest back in the amateurs...i dont know about roy.... prime rjj is unbeatable....
It's too bad Roy never had a REAL rival in his prime at 168-175. Toney could have been that guy, but lacked the discipline. Hopkins at the time was too small, and in a way it's too bad they fought so early in their careers, because that fight ended up being the starting point for the negotiations of what would have been a MUCH more interesting fight. And between Seoul and HBO paying him hand over fist, he was never going overseas. Post Tarver everyone says the ATGs at 175 all starch him, but the truth is, we will never know what his prime chin was like, because outside of one moment against Eric freaking Lucas, it was never even remotely tested.
Prime RJJ was the best at whatever weight class he was in by some margin. If his resume was a bit better he'd make an arguement for being the GOAT. My favorite fighter of all time, loved watching him fight back in the day
The Roy Jones that fought the night of the Griffin rematch may be the baddest man ever to enter a ring.
The funny/sad thing is there are actually people who will argue that Calzaghe could beat a prime RJJ.
This guy was the truth, nobody comes close.... I say this with reverence, not out of hate or ignorance. Roy looked like a f*cking animal when he got up on the turnbuckle after Griffin II.
