Roy's unorthadox style was built around his incredible athleticism. His whole style was built upon split second timing. He needed to either retire at an early age or change his style to compensate for his age. When Joe got to him he'd already been devastated by defeats to Tarver and Johnson 4 years earlier. He was there for the taking. He had the hand speed, but neither the legs, reflexes or confidence he'd had earlier. Roy was Joe's worst nightmare. He was faster, more powerful and harder to hit. Joe would never have fought Roy in his prime. You're talking about a guy who made 20 plus defences of a lightly regarded WBO belt.
In Joe's opinion, Glen Johnson only beat Roy because Roy was shot. And that was 4 and a half years earlier. What I was referring to, was that it's a fantasy to think that Joe would have fought a prime version of Roy. We're talking about a guy who refused to raise his profile, and who starved himself to fight in a weak division where he made 20 plus defences of a lightly regarded title.
I can't condone anybody taking PEDS. But Roy had incredible athletiscism even when he started out as a teenager in the amateurs.
You really think there's PEDS on the market that give you the gifts that Roy had? You think he was taking PEDS even as an amateur and for his entire career?
What is Roy's point to all this. How is Roy rated in the all time ratings by most people? To me he was great I just don't know if he was top 50.
everyone takes steroids whats your point? you think mike tyson was natural?lennos lewis? david tua? riddick bower? floyd mayweather?manny? NO. the fact is he had amazing genetics + steroids.. = demigod.. ive seen plenty of people use steroids yet they are **** cus of their genes. No idea what you mean by glass cannon are you implying he would be a bum? you are delusional then.. he probably started using steroids ONLY for important fights.. or difficult ones. If ur implying he had glass chin, someone that starts at 157 for their first pro fight and goes up fight a heavyweight that outweights them by over 20 lbs(john ruiz) and takes their best punches does NOT have a glass chin...
I think Roy just falls into a simple cycle. 1. He gets embarrassed and brutally ko'd. 2. He doesn't want to end his career on a ko loss so he decides to fight a nobody and go out with a win. 3. He beats the nobody easily. 4. "Hey! I've still got it! Why stop now??" 5. See step 1.
