I tend to doubt Jones would take this fight, but if he did I think he earns a 8-4 or 9-6 type of decision that had him in some trouble and never offers a re-match.
Very interesting match up .. really not sure ... if properly motivated I may go with Conteh but it is a decision one way or the other ..
Take the money and run , Roy would be looking over his shoulder saying "Ain't doin that **** again". I was in Vegas and saw Conteh KO Terry Daniels , I thought Daniels had maybe expired for a minute of course I was a youngling so it might've a bit more dramatic than it actually was .Did anyone else see this fight? Conteh had heavy hands IMO , of course I might be partial to Conteh having witnessed that , I'll still go with the Brit ! Forgot to include Mendozas post in on this about Roy not offering a rematch.
I would lean towards Conteh, the healthy Handed Conteh that is, he had excellant skills back with a vicious attitude, before the Hand Injuries, Playboy Lifestyle, and Managerial disillusionment took hold, No doubt about it Roy hand Buckets of Style....but a lot of those 70's Lightheavy's had Buckets of Substance...I will pay Roy the compliament of saying Home advantage may of been crucial, John was really not quite the same after the Willie "Bull" Taylor USA Broken Hand Introduction Fight, although Even American Journals gave him full marks for Presentation, a stoppage win would of been a definate marketability boost, Stii its Conteh for me, ( As an aside, i would also have fancied the Passing Through Lt Heavyweight Jimmy Ellis to have upset Jones, he was fast and that dangerous right hand was in its Element as Johnny Persol found out. )
I like Roy by points in a very close fight, I see Jones getting knocked down late, and barely holding and hanging on to win a SD.. Conteh could kick ass, but Roys speed would make this fight difficult for him..
conteh could fight, no question but roy would totally outclass him. either wins by shutout on the cards or late stoppage.
Roy by relatively comfortable decision, for me. Surprised that there's a slight edge towards Conteh in the voting, really. Conteh could punch and box equally well, and had that real nasty streak in him, but a peak Jones just didn't get hit enough for me to think that he wouldn't make his pretty big speed advantage count here. Jones could be troubled / made to look less than spectacular now and then, even at his best, by fighters with canny defence and great patience and discipline, but Conteh never really displayed that, at least not enough for me to think that he could make Jones tentative the way someone like Griffin or to a lesser extent McCallum did. Appreciate that Conteh's record doesn't do him justice at all, given the talent he has, but when I think that sometimes he gets too much credit in these kind of hypothetical match ups as a way of overcompensation. I think Conteh at his best was an outstanding fighter, but Jones at his best was one of the most gifted and best all-round fighters in history. Conteh doesn't get disgraced but I think a win here is beyond him. Roy by four or five rounds over both the 12 and 15 round distance.
John was highly skilled but if Roy employed a jab, something he often didn't do, I think his speed would have kept John just shy of scoring enough to win. If Roy didn't stay on the outside John's excellent timing with his left hook may have put the difference on his side.
Yanks being typically Yanks yet again. Jones feels the power of Conteh's hook, and crawls within himself. Conteh by wide decision in a boring fight, because Jones is too frightened to engage.
If the fight stayed orderly and to a pattern, although I love Conteh I'd take Jones just to edge it on points. However Conteh had these spells in fights when he suddenly upped the ante and intensity and fought extremely visciously and if I say dirty! This could upset Jones and there would be a possibility of Conteh stopping him.
