RJJ was a drug cheat, and wasted a lot of time fighting subpar competition. I was ecstatic when Tarver KTFO. Since then, he's grown on me very much, and I really appreciate his commentary, especially when you consider the clowns he has to commentate with.
Almost like he was medically enhanced. No matter how good he was in his prime, every comparison against current middleweights, super middleweights and light heavyweights is flawed because prime RJJ wouldn't even pass a simple USADA drug test nowadays. He was a phemom. But one like Carl Lewis
He was a great fighter with an excellent amateur background. Obviously his other-worldly speed and athleticism played a major part in catapulting him to be the best pound for pound fighter in the sport for several years, but he did have a solid foundation as far as boxing ability. My only knock on him is I didn't feel he stepped up the level of competition during his absolute peak years- specifically between 1996 to 1999. He fought a prime Toney a few years earlier and a green Hopkins who was still an up and comer, but the latter part of the decade was filled with matches against mediocre competition. I know the SMW and LHW divisions weren't filled with elite level fighters at the time, but there were a few guys who could've given him a good fight in his true prime that he didn't meet up with (such as Dariusz Michalczewski.) truthfully, I would've loved to seen him meet up with Hopkins around 2002 when both men were universally considered the 2 top P4P fighters in the sport. Their ego's wouldn't let them negotiate a deal back than, and they ended up meeting about 6 or 7 years too late in their rematch. Still, Jones Jr was an incredible fighter and IMO in his absolute prime, he would've been a hard out for anyone in the history of the sport. It would've taken someone really special to beat him.
Steroids don't teach you how to parry, slip, counter, feint, or control a ring. (Which is what the video showcases, skills.)
I actually think it gives you the mental tenacity/energy to be more instinctive and it gives you greater potent mental power to actually execute these things tbh. I liken it to a fighter who's natural and getting tired vs that same fighter who is not tired. Mental and physical do seem to go hand in hand. Edit: Obviously it's not to a major extent but hey, when you're in super saiyan mode, everything is just sharper.
Great video. The things he was able to do. Give these other guys steroids as some detractors here are trying to use. They're still not going to replicate what Roy did or could do.
Well, with steroids James Toney managed to be a top 10 heavyweight and Hopkins managed to be a champ until nearly 50. Roids were very good to that generation.
Roids also aid in improved recovery so you can train harder and more frequently. This will inevitably lead to more time being provided in order to be able to perfect technique, punching power and endurance because the body is pumped up and can handle a greater training load. So those who say peds don't improve ability, are only partially correct, as the intake by itself doesn't alone improve it - however without question, it can undoubtedly lead to helping to assist the individual with devoting more time spent on improving their abilities through longer training sessions as well as greater intensity. This whole debacle surrounding his unbridled roid use during his prime years, undeniably undermines his legacy. Oh Good Lord, please don't bring your garbage in here in.
You only have to observe the way he would dance, drop his hands, taunt and showboat in front of his opponents to understand how completly aware Jones was of the advantages he held over his opponents. He knew they never stood a chance against his medically enhanced body and as a result was more or less untouchable. This is what Androstenedione does, which is what Roy Jones was taking throughout his career; - Increases the production of the hormone testosterone - Blunts catabolic effects of heavy training - Increases and sustain Energy Levels - Keeps red blood cells healthy, - Enhance recovery enabling the athlete to train harder - Enhances growth following exercise, - Improvs Mood and Agression Make of that what you will....
Really? Was that how much he tested positive for ? Got to be taken in to account really, as great as he was !
Yeah, Richard Hall who was caught with a steroid in the same bout and had multiple times more testosterone in his system than Jones did was just totally helpless against Roy's "medically enhanced" body Right, because Roy was caught again? Or do you have some other evidence? It's a shame boxing fans would rather stretch a stain so far and completely ignore the skill and artistry with which one of the best fighters ever fought. I'd say most of you who spend their time exaggerating steroid scandals have never been in a ring and don't realize how skill-based boxing is. The video includes other freak athletes who weren't able to achieve the same level of craft. The answer isn't in some magical substance.
