I was just at an open training session here in Sydney and they asked Roy jones jnr which win was the biggest and most important to him and he said beating James lights out toney because he said no one thought he would beat Toney. He also said he dosnt hate hopkins he just likes beating him. I think jones might possibly lose by KO to danny green.
I would agree with that. At the time everyone thought Toney was a monster, and he just made it look easy. As far as his biggest accomplishment I would say unifying all three LH titles is up there.
I agree with Jones, although he was not the underdog he made himself out to be. Jones' athletic gifts were very apparent at that point. I remember Toney was favored, but most everyone was giving Jones a real chance. Many people picking Toney made it sound as though the fight was 50/50. James Toney had really come into his own at 168. Toney's counter punching skills and accuracy was amazing. Toney was frequenting boxing magazine covers, and some were writing that Whitaker may have some competition for the pound for pound spot. That competition ended up being Roy Jones. James Toney was one of the best fighters to ever campaign at super middle, and this victory is Jones' best piece of evidence for being the best ever at 168.
But consider the opposition. It's like saying Thomas Hearns' best win was against Virgil Hill. Sure it's an achievement victory, But against an inferior foe.
And Toney managed it, also. This speaks of the weakness of Jones's resume rather than anything else, I fear.
Bernard Hopkins was not accomplished at the time Jones beat him, and quite frankly, not even that great of a fighter.
