BTW, I forgot the exact number but Roy Jones holds the record for the most consecutive won rounds in boxing. Think about that. He was so good that his opposition coudnt even win a single round against him let alone the fight.
the guy was very cocky - he once played a basketball game before a fight to prove that he was so great - that was stupid, and then he just started getting knocked out spectacularly
the first montel fight was funny - RJJ looked absolutely terrified, visibly shaking with fear - tarver mocking then sleeping him was classic too
2 things: a) He beat B-Hop clearly, but didn't make him look average. b) A lot (not all) of the fighters you talk about being better in retrospect WERE mediocre, as evidenced by a lot of the careers post-RJJ fight.
In his prime no one, from any era could beat him at whatever weight he fought at. Then why do you have Louis, Ali, Marciano and Foreman rated over him? He and they fought at heavyweight, am I correct?
No waay. Jones was a terrific fighter but his resume is too weak to be considered as top 10 ATG. Hopkins and Pac fought in virtually the same era and they have better resume's than Roy.
Roy Jones is the greatest athlete that boxing has ever seen. No one has ever done the things that he was able to do. That said, the Roy Jones that fought up to the Ruiz fight is a top ten of all time. However, his subsequent knockout losses and one sided thrashing at the hands of Calzaghe damage his legacy.
I ranked those guys a head of Roy because they had better careers than Roy. But prime for prime and in the appropriate weight range, Roy would top them all. That's the think about Jones Jr. If he would've been promoted by Top Rank or Don King earlier in his career, he would've fought bigger fights and perhaps ran into an opponent or two, who would've made him even better than he was. Beyond the resume, you have to consider the style in which he won fights and the kind of things he could do in the ring. No other fighter short of Leonard, Ali, and maybe Pacquiao could come close to being that kind of fighter. Also, I believe that the knockout losses and Calzaghe loss (all beyond the age of 35) won't mean **** in the scheme of things. Just another great who stayed too long. Ali got his ass beat by Trevor Berbrick (not half the fighter a Tarver or Calzaghe was) and Larry Holmes and Leon Spinks past his prime. Roy's fighting on because he loves boxing. Its all he knows and who the **** are we to question the guy if he wants to go out there an put it on the line at 40. He's got heart.
The equivalent of Pacquiao fighting a heavyweight to Jones fighting a heavyweight would be for Pac to fight Kelly Pavlik.
imo, rjj's career (although a certified ATG) did not do his immense talent justice. the most sublime fighter most of us have seen in our lifetimes, SHOULD have been (and could've been) the greatest there was. it's sad to see him go after this guy and that guy in the state he's in, when he should've done so in his prime.
