Roy Jones Jr. Top 100 ATG?

Bert Sugar's lists are always very 1900s top heavy and he prefers guys who fought 50 to 60 years ago. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but he underrates and underappreciates fighters right now.

The fact that he has Marcel Cerdan and Jake LaMotta, as well as a good number of others, over Pernell Whitaker says it all.

 

I agree with that statement when it came to physical attributes, that by itself doesn't translate to top 100 ATG

 

Its funny how the list bias against fighters over the 20 years, the list is decent but not the best I seen.

 

But Roy did face great opposition: Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, Virgil Hill, Mike McCallum, Antonio Tarver, Clinton Woods, Lou Del Valle, Jorge Fernando Castro, Thulani Malinga, etc.

He beat 3 future hall of famers and 3 all time greats. Maybe 4 future hall of famers if you want to count Hill who is borderline. And if he beats Tito, despite the fact that he is well past his best days and fighting at a weight class not suited for him, Roy would make it arguably 5.

 

I will agree with that statement....let me ask you this:

Would you put RJJ before Tommy Hearns in any top 100 ATG list..,,,obviously no.....Tommy Hearns, is a legit to 100 ATG and top 50 ATG, regardless of his loses...just by th strenght of his resume

 

Which 3 ATG's?

 

Hopkins, Toney, McCallum

 

Physical attributes + convincing wins over Virgil Hill, Mike McCallum, James Toney, and Bernard Hopkins make him ATG in my book.

Montell Griffin is pretty underrated and his win against Ruiz is taken way too lightly (name another person in his era that can come up from 175 and pull the same win).

When you see his abilities, it's easy to take the cup-half-empty approach and wonder what could have been. Objectively, though, when you don't consider his talent and look at his ledger it's pretty damn impressive in and of itself.

 

Griffin is very underrated.... He was also a awkward style for Roy but he finally adjusted to it.. He also has wins against Toney... The only fighter in the world to have wins against both Toney and Jones.

 

Griffin has wins over 2 all time greats... kind of wierd to think about.

I mean, Bert Sugar has 87 people ahead of Roy Jones. At this point, you only have 78 ahead of him... I guess that puts RJJ in 79th.

as dominate as roy was, everyone says he'd get destroyed by foster and spinks and conn. i dont know, he had power, probably the fastest fighter ever, and his defense in his prime was as good as any in history. i dont think lack of competition should always disqualify a fighter, especially one of roys talent. thoughts?

 

Who says that Billy Conn would destroy him? Whoever says that is dead wrong. It would be a good/interesting fight though.

I never held it against Roy that he never fought DM, Benn, Eubank, Collins, and McClellan. Sure if he faced them, and beat them, it would have enhanced his legacy even more - making him a top 5-10 all time great in many people's mind, but I prefer to look at exactly what he did as a fighter. Looking at his resume and accomplishments as they stand now, they are pretty damn impressive and he's definitely worthy of being called an All Time Great.

 

Or it could prove you hate him. You have no facts. Only your interpretation. Every single historian you have every presented has him in the top 100. Every single one.
