It was normally between 6-9 pounds.

    He was 174 for Toney.

A lot of his LHW fights were around 182/183.

Thanks. I was thinking the stuff we hear about how he gained and then cut muscle which effected his chin/skill was BS. But if we're talking 13lb then I guess it could have an effect.

Yes. A lot of LHW fighters dehydrate from 188-190. If Jones only gained 6lb I'd have to say it didn't matter.

For the Ruiz fight, Roy hired Mackie Shilstone (a respected sports strategist, who'd previously worked with Michael Spinks and Ridd*ck Bowe) and started camp weighing 192 pounds, with 8.7% body fat.

His previous fight had been against Clinton Woods, in Sept 02, where his fight night weight had been 182 pounds.

So he was 10 pounds heavier when he went to Mackie.

In camp, Mackie then changed his body fat, to 6%.

    http://www.secondsout.com/columns/thomas-hauser/jones-ruiz-and-the-roy-jones-legacy1

On the night of the fight, Roy weighed 199 pounds, but 196 pounds, if you subtracted three pounds for his clothing.

Afterwards, Mackie advised him to remain at HW, because in his opinion, losing muscle can effect the body's immune system.

After the Ruiz fight, Roy was open to remaining at HW, if he could land a big money fight.

He almost fought Evander, until Evander decided to fight Toney instead, for less money, because he was pi*sed with Don King.

After that, Roy had the opportunity to fight Corrie Sanders. But the fight fell through, after Roy had gone back and asked for more money.

He also met Mike Tyson in Miami, to discuss a potential fight in 2004.

But after a big money fight had failed to materialise, he signed to fight Tarver in Sept, 03.

According to Roy's coach - Alton Merkerson, Roy had kept his Ruiz physique from March, in the hope of landing a big HW fight.

If that was true, (I have no reason not to believe Merk) it meant that Roy only had around two months to lose the weight.

Nobody knows what his exact weight, and body fat % was when he started camp, but it must have been in the 190's.

So there's a few things to consider:

There's Mackie's opinion that losing muscle can damage the immune system.

The fact that Roy was approaching 35.

The fact that he'd had 50 fights.

If Merk was telling the truth regarding his physique, he didn't have long to lose the weight.

Personally, I think his downfall was due to a culmination of things.

Good info. I'm always looking for a way to detract from Roy but I'll find another way

(This stems from a recent Fighthype video I can't find where Roy goes off on a hilarious rabbit trail about he he 'GOT to be somethin special. Ain't NO other fighter in the HISTORY of boxing gone from light middleweight to be come heavyweight champ of the world, so you KNOW I GOT to be special.')

*Meanwhile Bob Fitzsimmons is like 'y'all musta forgot.'

At LHW, Jones was about 182-185 lbs in the ring. Below that, I think he was close to 180.

this goes hand in hand with your other thread about same day weights.

These unofficl weights before fights do not use the same scales, are not monitored and can be quite incorrect and guys wear whatever they want etc

Jones is a perfect example, his unofficial weight was i the 190s but he says it was over 200lbs on a different unoffical scale.

What if Roy fought Chris Byrd at HW?
