Who wins at middleweight- current Pavlik vs. mid-90's RJJ? Does anyone think the Ghost would have a chance? As much as I like him, I think he would be exposed pretty bad and probably knocked out within 5-6 rounds
Not fighting at the current level he fights at. He has been floored by lighter punchers than Jones. He would also have a hard time maintaining any pressure because of his footspeed. He is a big guy (I think he is more of a SMW or LHW) so he may be able to give Jones trouble early on, but thats doubtful.
Taylor isn't the only one to drop Pavlik and he doesn't hit anywhere near as hard as Jones. No excuses for his chin....Mayorga used to do the same stuff and never got dropped doing it. The question was about prime Jones, not current Jones. So why are you even bringing it up?
You're right, current Jones can't beat Pavlik. But I am unsure Pavlik can go the distance with prime Jones. He had a crazy KO ratio. And the couple of fighters he didn't stop have never been stopped by anyone as far as I know.
Re read the sentence. I said Taylor dropped Pavlik and he doesn't hit anywhere near as hard as Jones. As in Taylor doesn't. And if we are going by examples or proof in the ring, then I will submit that posters like Calabrese who like to say Jones' chin is complete glass are using a hindsight and making a judgement based on 34yr old LHW Jones, not prime MW Jones would was never dropped and when hit cleanly usually just posed. As for Jones and Pavlik punching power, Pavlik hits hard, but his power ususally takes multiple punches to wear you down. Jones at his peak, while known for his speed, had one punch KO power. Their power is different. I don't know who hits harder.
There are not going to be very many fighters in there prime of any era who could beat a prime roy easily.
I never said that it would determine the outcome. Pavlik coming straight at Jones would be suicide for him. His foot movement is too slow to maintain adequate pressure to get Jones to cover up. And Jones in his prime fought off the ropes, unlike Jones today. If you could get him there. Jones would circle him and explode in and hit him like Taylor was, but he woudn't be there to get hit back like Taylor was. Now in a few years, this may be a different fight. A KO is more likely to come from sustained beatings, I agree. But lets look at Jones from MW to SMW. He was 32-0 with 28 KO's. And most of the people he stopped got hit with one punch, went down, got up wobbly, Jones jumped on them and the ref stopped the fight (if they weren't out from the first punch, and a good bit were). Their power is different, and Jones is much more sudden and explosive. The type of pressure fighters that gave him trouble (as much as prime Jones had) were guys who had good footspeed and stayed right in his chest. Not pressure fighters who threw a ton of punches. (Griffin and Hopkins)
Toney nailed him once, prompting Jones to stick out his tounge and do a little dance. Hopkins hit him with that lead right (which back then, had some good mustard on it). As a matter of fact, Hopkins landed it 3 times in one round within a minute. Hall hit Jones a couple of times at LHW, and he was known as a puncher. Either way, lets forget that. Neither of us can prove much here. I don't believe Pavlik could land a big punch on Jones anyways. His timing isn't that good IMO.
Going overboard. I am not giving him flack. And Miranda was no where near the #1 guy in the division. Abraham was ahead of him, so was Sturm and someone else. Its not giving him flack to not take him over an ATG at this stage of his career. Pavlik has not shown the timing to catch someone like Jones. He hits guys in front of him. Del Valle dropped Jones at LHW, not MW. And Jones got up at 5 and won the next round.
I said Pavlik's timing was not THAT good. Perhaps I should have emphasized it more. It's decent, but not good enough to catch someone similar to Jones. Miranda ARGUABLY beat Abraham. But he didn't. Miranda was ranked behind either Sturm or the guy who beat him. Miranda was somewhere like #4 in the division. He was never rated #1. Never.
