And you can tell that from last night where boxing was reduced to; 1) clinch, push Green to the ropes, hook, uppercut, clinch, push, push, hook, push, clinch, uppercut, clinch,push... break. 2) start again at 1 :think
Ward stacks up well to the Jones that Tarver beat. Now how does Ward stack up to the 94-96 Jones? About as well as a Yorkie fighting a Pitbull.
I don't like this myth that Roy could never box, Roy could box the hell out of people, it is just his fundamentals were weak, but he could overcome that with his athleticism, but the mental game was there. He showed that **** when he fought B-Hop the 2nd time, when B-Hop started to get outboxed by a shot RJJ, that man cracked and started the bull rushing, huggin and clinching, and all the theatrics. Either way, I don't think Ward can deal with RJJ's speed, from what I've seen so far, but like said before, we are going to see how he can handle elite speed and power when he fights Dirrell.
Once again, fighters of today just get softer and softer huh? 90% of the time the older fighter will win. I personally think Ward is a better boxer than Jones. I think Ward would give Jones fits. Not sure if he would win though. No blowout in this one.
Roy was a very special fighter. He is in the Hearns,Leonard class and Ward is not. Roy would easily beat Ward by UD.
The difference in this fight would be footspeed. Roy could slide and pivot much more quickly than Andre, and though Ward's defense is very solid, he'd get tagged on counters. I like Ward a lot, though. He has shown tremendous versatility and discipline. He can become a great fighter without ever reaching RJJ's level.
Al is right.. Ward has more tools in the belt than Roy.. However Roy's Strenths in athleticism, speed are better.. this is more a case of quality over quantity.. Roy is quality above Ward's Many gifts.. I see a UD by Jones..
Different level, Prime RJJ was a beast who seemed unbeatable at the time. RJJ beats Ward rather easily. But the comparison is unfair, Ward only has 22 fights so I think that he is doing better than expected by most people.
:good I'd have to agree at this point as well, in fact i take Jones over him for sure. I expect greatness from Ward though, i'm willing to go on record with that now, i think he's real quality.
If Ward had a better chin, I would say he would lose a decision but probably win 4 or 5 rounds. With his questionable chin, Roy might've just knocked him out in the mid rounds. Ward is a very versatile fighter and is highly intelligent. I'm not sure if Jones would just run right through him.
