Roy was a slightly superior athlete than Floyd, who's not that far behind. The main difference is that Roy mostly relied in his athleticism; when it faded, he hadn't developed his fundamentals enough to the point that he could fall back on it once his speed and reflexes diminished. What's amazing about Floyd, on the other hand, is that he not only has otherworldly athleticism, but has otherworldly technique and fundamentals. Even if he has slightly diminished in speed, he has still dominated because he has the technique to fall back on.
This is like 2 sides arguing over what you should have for dinner: turkey or ham. Both are the bomb. One of the better threads I've seen on ESB in a while. Good vids and analysis fellas.
Lets take a look on when they couldn't be touched ..Gotta say like the music for Floyd's video : [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HH4K7hlGm4A[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vj_Zj3anRd8[/ame]
***** who u think Roy is charley burley?...Some mu****a who I was too young to see?..LOL...Roy is just like any other elite fast fighter and its not even a competition anymore #killthreaddead
yes roy could throw a 6 punch combo, but what roy can not do is us his reflexes for defense. Floyd's inside game is where Floyd has an advantage with his reflexes over roy. Roy would use he speed to get in, let off a 5 punch combo then use his feet to get out.. Against the ropes Roy would just cover up, take a few punches to the gloves but then come back with something hard, to get his opponent off him. Floyd on occasion would use his feet to get out of trouble when he was younger but would also fight in the pocket and make his opponent miss then counter, but he would also use his reflex and his ability to keep his eyes open during heavy fire to parry, slip and block his opponents shots . some thing roy could not do ..
Roy's defense came from his athleticism ..He would hit you then move out the way ,much diffrent than Floyd who parries and shoulder rolls ..I think we can agree that Floyd is more technically sound than Roy thats why his defense is so much better ..Jones was more of a free style boxer if we can even use that term .At his best his defense is underratted considering he was barley hit clean for over a decade ..But agin two diffrent styles so its hard to compare ..
Prime Jones was on another planet. I agree, you can't compare styles, that's the main reason why Jones today, after he lost his a significant amount of his reflexes and speed isn't the even close to the same fighter he was in the past, he doesn't have the defensive skills of FMJ. However, that said, in their prime was there a more entertaining to fighter to marvel at than Jones?
no really this seals the deal for me. Roy just landed a low jab and was about to reset and then he immediately is able to recognize the jab coming toward him and is able to counter
