I agree with you. I do think Roy could box well on the outside for the first few rounds and build a points lead. Moving, slipping, countering, and out-jabbing Floyd early. He might even drop him, perhaps catching him with an off balanced shot coming in.

Floyd would close the gap and stops Roy somewhere between around the 8th or 9th. RJJ's best chance to beat Floyd is at supermiddleweight.

There's a whole lot wrong with this post. Patterson's hook wasn't cartoonish, it's the best leaping left hook in the sport's history. Patterson isn't anywhere near Jones on a P4P list, not even in the same class in terms of greatness. Roy's physical advantages in this fight consists of slightly faster hands, and yes, I mean slightly. Patterson has the fastest hands of any heavyweight in history and his combinations were sickening. He clearly holds the physical strength and power advantage and his chin is far, far more proven than Roy's. You say people should watch Roy in his prime before posting on this thread, but I think it's the other way around, man. You should go watch Patterson at his peak.

I hear you. Don't forget, Roy doesn't bring the power of a Liston, Quarry, Bonavena, Chuvalo or Eddie Machen. Floyd would get hit no doubt. He'd still walk Roy down and stop him.

Already have. I still feel the same way. Remember that Patterson was very green at 175.

Are you kidding me? Jones may have slightly faster hands when throwing single shots but his hand speed is head and shoulders above Patterson when delivering combinations(which he could throw from any angle at any time. Not to mention RJJ's reflexes, which are the best anyone has ever seen in the ring(the same reflexes that would allow him to get the aforementioned combinations off at will). I believe that RJJ would catch Patterson off balance... after throwing one of those lunging/leaping power shots... with a devastating counter combination and end it fairly early.
People keep mentioning Patterson walking Roy down without giving specifics. When did Patterson ever "walk down" a counter puncher with RJJ's physical gifts?

Patterson had huge power pound for pound and the speed to tag jones. Combination of speed and power is too much for Roy. I think people are overestimating Roy Jones here.

Patterson had LIGHTENING fast hands. ****ing lightening. Roy Jones is not on another level as it pertains to speed whatsoever. Faster? Yeah? on another level? get a clue people.

Patterson had great headmovement, explosive hands, and power at heavyweight let alone the lighter weights. Roy would get knocked out even though he is the p4p greater fighter.

Patterson didn't just throw leaping shots. His offense consisted of him coming in with headmovement shooting his left jab, throwing tight left hooks, straight right crosses, ripping to the body. He fought behind a stiff left jab with great evasive movement throwing everything tight, hard, and fast.

Roy was amazing with amazing physical gifts but that doesn't mean he can exercise them as seamlessly against Floyd Patterson as he did against his often subpar competition.

I have trouble with the fact that his handspeed wasn't enough to get him by a much lesser fighter than Jones in Ingemar, and Liston didn't have the fastest hands either but beat Patterson to the punch.

I think a Lot of people are overestimating Patterson's hand speed. He wasn't faster than Jones. Jones has him in that department. Chin, I think Jones has him there too. Jones was down ONCE in his prime. Patterson 10+.

Patterson had more power, Jones had better defense.

Below cruiser, it Jones all day every day. At cruiser and up, I would give the nod to Patterson.

He beat patterson to the punch?

That's a misrepresentation of what transpired. He had Patterson gunshy on the backfoot tentative on the trigger. He by no means demonstrated better handspeed. Ingemar had power at heavyweight and was relatively physically imposing and he asserted himself accordingly. Theres more to it then speed... there is the stylistic matchup itself.

Jones has him in the chin department? based on what? Look who was hitting patterson for a start. That by no means equates to roy jones having the superior chin. The biggest obstacles in fighting above your weight is whether or not you carry power up into those weight classes, whether or not you can physically match your opponents in terms of strength, and whether or not you have the durability to absorb punishment in the higher weight classes. Patterson did not have a good jaw at heavyweight but that does not mean he had an inferior one to Roy Jones nor does it mean he has a glass chin at LHW for example.

    Oversimplification there.

This depends on how you measure p4p greatness, by weightclass jumping, than it´s without a doubt Jones Jr, or by competing against bigger man, which Patterson did nearly all his career and quite often as the older man too. Patterson also has more quality names on his resume. So, put that together and you it´s understandable when people rank Patterson ahead.

When did Jones fight someone with the combination of speed, power, defence and technique and who is bigger that Patterson brings to the table? Silly argument.

    :rofl

Hush, back to your cave, troll.

All due respect Bodhi, but anyone who does not see that RJJ's lead/counter uppercut would be a decisive factor against someone who would lean at the waist and be off balance all fight long isn't being objective. Jones Jr. lead/counter uppercut is the key to this fight!

One more thing. Patterson wouldn't be scared of Jones like he was against Liston. He wouldn't forget his skills in the dressing before the fight either.

SMW/LH Roy Jones has the faster hands, but not by much. Patterson's hands were fast. It certainly means a lot when Ali called him the "most skilled" as a boxer several times in books and interviews. Ali, Chuvalo and Quarry all said Patterson had very fast hands.
