Given the Marciano poll I thought I'd ask about a fighter who is similar in size and (imo) a level below the Rock. Given prime versions of the two 180+ fighters, who emerges the victor here?
Roy was regarded as the best at this weight during his day as was jack. It's a perfectly valid matchup and one which can be debated either way in my opinion.
Roy Jones could easily do what Tunney did, except at a higher level, with far greater speed and unorthodoxy.
fair point but that was a waaaaay past prime dempsey. what about the dempsey of fulton (who we have no footage of) or willard (who would NOT be allowed to stand over an opponent and drill him on his knees)?
Hi, i'm new here .. Just found this site and this forum is fantastic .. I'm pretty surprised everyone is going for Roy in this fight as Jack Dempsey is a formidable opponent .. Roy isnt going to dent Jack with anything and Jack is going to make him work in every round, I'm taking Dempsey to land something big in rds 4 - 6 and then it could be goodnight Roy Jones Jr. Remember, Roy has to work all night, Jack just has to land something. Roy could make him look pretty silly in the opening salvo's though ..
btw: i think it would be best to judge each man by their styles on film, not merely reputation. feel it would make a bit of an objective and justifiable analysis
Tunney gets such a raw deal over the 'Dempsey was past his prime' argument .. Tunney would have given Dempsey a tough fight even when Dempsey was in his 'prime', just like Holyfield would have given a prime Tyson trouble. Tunney after all, was the guy who beat Greb 3 times out of 5, and that is an achievement which will never be forgotten in the history of Boxing
No ?? Jack Dempsey was fast, fearless, and has dynamite in his hands, how do you figure Roy is just going to turn up and treat him like he's Clinton Woods ?? Cmon man, Jack Dempsey is going into this fight as favourite .. I'm a huge Roy Jones fan, when he was in his 90s prime he was magic, but dont do Dempsey a disservice, he was a monster
the idea that "one punch" is all it took to take out jones is foolish. dempsey was a great hitter and a better finisher. his aggression was his best trait and i don't see him knocking jones out by just landing...he'd have to corner him and drill him again and again. i'm not saying he doesn't but a glancing blow, or a single punch, isn't doing the trick. to imply that jones crumbles the moment an opponent lands is a disservice to him
Didn't Dempsey get knocked out in the first round by a bum who was a natural light heavy or SMW? But Jones couldn't dent him?
