The only thing true in your post was Toney not being a true 168 pounder anymore and that he was killing himself to make the weight. If you had seen the Toney-Nunn fight you would know that Toney didn't get outboxed for 10 1/2 rounds. That's just nonsense. Nunn dominated the still green Toney for the first 8 rounds, but Toney landed some subtle body punches and by the 8th round Nunn gassed. Toney won rounds 9 and 10 big and then finished Nunn in the 11th. Toney Griffin I was a close affair where Toney was again severely weight-drained (though not as bad as against Roy). Most people seeing the fight thought Toney deserved the win. Grifin went on to give Roy all he could handle. 'Toney had a helluva row with Prince Charles Williams' - no, that was a masterful performance by James where he took Williams apart little by little before KOing him in the 12th. James took a couple rounds off but was never in any trouble. Typical James Toney fight. Go watch the fight again.
He was sluggish,he looked slower and had less snap in his punches than he had in some of his past fights .I think Roy was all wrong for Toney and would beat any version of Lights out but that doesnt change the fact that James had trouble making weight for this fight.
You can disagree but Toney looked sluggish and his balance and co-ordination suffered from the weight gain - WHICH WAS OBVIOUS. Roy did his job and would have been the better man on any given day!
you're right. both men were great counter punchers but jones simple was the faster and more athleticof the two which is the difference. two men who do the same type of thing but one does it better then the other.
He looked sluggish because Jones made him uncomfortable and tentative and always guessing. Why people can't understand this is friggin amazing to me! If you put Boxer A in with an opponent slower and less skilled than him, Boxer A can do as he pleases, relax and look GREAT! Put the same guy in with a faster guy and better guy, he gets discombobulated, off balance at times, starts second guessing himself, etc etc This is so simple, yet people miss it always.
Toney was dead at the weight in. He looked sluggish and slow. Just compare his body structure with that of the Barkley fight and you will get your answer, totally different.
You do not know **** about Toney. Just compare his body structure with that of the Barkley fight and come back again. Toney was sluggish in the Jones fight. His punches were not sharp. His body looked bad.You just talk nonsense.
I just watched Toney/Nunn and it's no wonder people have a distorted view of that fight if they listen to the dumb**** commentator who is unabashedly kissing Nunn's ass and saying some of the most ridiculous false color commentating I've ever heard-pretty much all slanted for Nunn and against Toney.
There is a quote from Bob Arum on Vs series legends of the ring when they had this fight he talked about how Toney's weight was a factor and dismissed it and said " When has Toney ever made weight ,He always had problems making weight " So to water down that win is unfair considering Toney was also a heavy favorite in that fight ..
I couldn't agree more. Jones put on one of the best displays of boxing I've ever seen. I was simply in awe the way he made an elite boxer like Toney look average. Underrated clinic truly historic.
Speed & Movement gives Toney problems look at the Nunn fight. I feel RJJ in his prime would always beat him but Toney wasn't as fast & sharp as he should've been he was sluggish but even then he showed good defense against Jones at times. Making weight was a problem for him but no excuses, great fight and the better man won. BTW I'm a fan of Nunn, Toney, & Jones but happen to like RJJ and James more than Nunn.
